│║ ║ │
│║ The previous album, ôBreakerö, already showed a ║ │
│║ considerable progression from the first couple ║ │
│║ of records, which were way too cheesy and ║ │
│║ unfocused. However, it seemed Accept still had ║ │
│║ to find their way and direction they wanted to ║ │
│║ follow. I guess they finally did by 1982, with a ║ │
│║ little inspiration from NWOBHM bands and ║ │
│║ classics, like Judas Priest or Mot÷rhead, ║ │
│║ playing heavier than ever, essential to ║ │
│║ determine their intentions. That year featured a ║ │
│║ big bunch of legendary albums that would make ║ │
│║ history, vital for the development of still ║ │
│║ primitive 80Æs heavy metal. Accept contributed ║ │
│║ to it with this release specially, considered by ║ │
│║ most people as their finest hour, though not as ║ │
│║ popular as its successor, ôBalls To The Wallö. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Action starts pretty soon here, just a few ║ │
│║ seconds after that silly intro before Udo ║ │
│║ screams like mad, a prelude to WolfÆs lethal ║ │
│║ riffing attack on the unforgettable ôFast As A ║ │
│║ Sharkö. A song which, along with the also rapid ║ │
│║ rhythm of ôFlash RockinÆ Manö, became hugely ║ │
│║ influential, not only because of its admirable ║ │
│║ speed, also its innovative skilled classical ║ │
│║ music influenced main pickinÆ part. Probably, ║ │
│║ they didnÆt realize by the time they made it, ║ │
│║ but Accept created a brand new sound with that ║ │
│║ one number. Certainly, the most amazing killer ║ │
│║ tune of the whole pack, most admirably arranged, ║ │
│║ accurately executed and aggressive. Although not ║ │
│║ the only heavy one here, the title-track or ║ │
│║ ôAhead Of The Packö are also quite rough, loose, ║ │
│║ including some good riffs and proper structures. ║ │
│║ Absolutely effective, professional stuff, less ║ │
│║ melodic and primitive than what Udo and co. had ║ │
│║ been doing before. The emphasis is basically put ║ │
│║ on riffs, which have become notably ruthless and ║ │
│║ insistent. But at times, they also offer some ║ │
│║ casual, accessible moments, like ôGet Readyö or ║ │
│║ the excessively cheesy ôDonÆt Go Stealing My ║ │
│║ Soul Awayö. Both primitive and based on easy ║ │
│║ musical bases that let vocals take more ║ │
│║ attention than the discreet instrumental parts. ║ │
│║ UdoÆs lyrics become so damn catchy, after an ║ │
│║ exhausting repetition of the main choruses. ║ │
│║ Other compositions, like ôDemonÆs Nightö ║ │
│║ particularly, are much ambitious and unnerving. ║ │
│║ That one sounds like a decent sequel of the ║ │
│║ previous record cut ôRun If You Canö, if we ║ │
│║ refer to the lyrics. The riffs are more weighty, ║ │
│║ low, with DirkschneiderÆs vocals totally ║ │
│║ sinister and dark. Something rare on AcceptÆs ║ │
│║ sound we couldnÆt find on any of their previous ║ │
│║ records. Just like the sweet ballad ôNeon ║ │
│║ Nightsö and the instrumentally progressive ║ │
│║ ôPrincess Of The Nightö. These guys did romantic ║ │
│║ love songs before, but never that intricated, ║ │
│║ well-arranged and versatile, reaching a higher ║ │
│║ level of musicianship. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ IÆm not surprised Accept became one of the most ║ │
│║ admired and respected heavy rock bands of the ║ │
│║ old continent. This material satisfied the ║ │
│║ demands of the scene back then, joining the ║ │
│║ completely refreshing new sound of the NWOBHM, ║ │
│║ with a bit of extra unique Teutonic brutality. ║ │
│║ However, while bands like Raven, Venom and ║ │
│║ Exciter sounded much closer to thrash, Udo and ║ │
│║ co.Æs more polished schemes and incessant melody ║ │
│║ were closer to what would be called power metal ║ │
│║ later. I must insist on the memorable opening ║ │
│║ song, which set the rules of that subgenre. ║ │
│║ Everything else Helloween, Gamma Ray, Blind ║ │
│║ Guardian, Grave Digger and friends, the whole ║ │
│║ mainstream power metal European league did is ║ │
│║ nothing but a consequence of that cut. In fact, ║ │
│║ I think ôFast As A Sharkö is still one of the ║ │
│║ most popular covered numbers ever, I canÆt ║ │
│║ recall how many already made a version of it by ║ │
│║ now: Altar, Ammit, FortΘ, Rage, Wehrmacht...and ║ │
│║ the list goes on and on. People from other ║ │
│║ subgenres, like Charlie Benante or Dan Lilker, ║ │
│║ admited it also had a big impact on their music. ║ │
│║ Accept embraced those characteristic elements ║ │
│║ that made 80Æs heavy metal something alternative ║ │
│║ to the old classic rock style, making their ║ │
│║ music current and fascinating, able to compete ║ │
│║ with the many rivals around. Their rhythms are ║ │
│║ notably faster, the guitar lines tougher and ║ │
│║ more distorted, instrumentally their music has ║ │
│║ been simplified from the 70Æs distinctive ║ │
│║ complexity, with no more bluesy bases. Though ║ │
│║ these tunes still have a certain commercial halo ║ │
│║ and too much melody, inherited from the first 2 ║ │
│║ poor albums. Undoubtedly, the heavier numbers ║ │
│║ are the ones which eventually reached more ║ │
│║ recognition and acclamation among the fans, ║ │
│║ while the mellow tunes have been ignored, ║ │
│║ skipped in the bandÆs live shows set-lists. But ║ │
│║ the general result is very solid and amusing, ║ │
│║ advanced for its time and pioneer, other times ║ │
│║ predictable and slightly inoffensive. This is ║ │
│║ the definitive transition between early Accept ║ │
│║ and 80Æs Accept, a vital phase for the evolution ║ │
│║ of their style. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ This is another of those classic albums you must ║ │
│║ have listened at least twice to understand the ║ │
│║ evolution of the genre during the great decade. ║ │
│║ ItÆs good to know the original roots of power, ║ │
│║ speed, even melodic thrash; once you find the ║ │
│║ connection, it becomes easier to comprehend the ║ │
│║ genuine concept and spirit of those subgenres. ║ │
│║ With this record, Accept became the greatest ║ │
│║ German heavy metal band, along with Scorpions, ║ │
│║ of course, inspiring thousands of later acts, ║ │
│║ such as Warlock, Scanner, Abraxas, Angel Dust, ║ │
│║ Running Wild, etc. whose music reveals an ║ │
│║ explicit influence from these guys. So, I ║ │
│║ recommend you to check this out and follow UdoÆs ║ │
│║ advice in one of these compositions: ôshake your ║ │
│║ heads 'till your necks are breaking, cry out as ║ │
│║ loud as you canö, while you listen to this. ║ │
