Notes:
As co-founder of the 4Digital Audio label with James Monro, Grant Collins
has led an illustrious career as producer, DJ and tastemaker as his
Excession alter-ego now comes to Proton Music in the form of the "Twilight"
EP. From avid music collector in the 1980s to drawing inspiration from the
iconic RandS imprint and the sounds of Joey Beltram, Collins' work has seen
his music featured on a wide range of imprints over the course of the last
twenty years. 100 releases under the Darshan moniker saw tracks featured on
Flying Rhino and Renaissance in the 1990s and led to a global DJ presence
that has seen him tour the world. Under his Excession production pseudonym,
Collins has cultivated a carefully considered persona "aimed squarely at 4x4
techno and progressive house". A skill set that analyses the minutiae of the
production process in infinite detail has led to a blend of "massive" beats
and mature underground dance music. Work for Flying Rhino, in addition to
his own 4DigitalAudio, has ably illustrated this attention to detail,
recognised further in the upper echelons of the production community with
the track "Ambilight" which found its way on to Nick Warren's "Renaissance:
The Masters Series" compilation in January 2013. Supported by such
luminaries as Sasha, Lee Burridge and Danny Tenaglia, the Excession sound
has courted long-term admirers from across the global DJ elite. Making his
debut on the label, Proton Music is now delighted to announce the release of
the two-track "Twilight" EP as a showcase for Excession's inimitable style
and technique. The title track itself is an immaculate blend of precision
beats and crisp percussive rhythms as stratified layers of rippling
arpeggios breathy pads and haunting vocals produce an emotive melodic flow
to proceedings. Meanwhile a deep, pulsating bass line provides yet further
depth to a track that resonates a retro sound that sits perfectly in the
modern underground house milieu. Partner track, "Amber", continues the
themes of its predecessor as a strong retro flavour fits perfectly within
the current progressive scene. An achingly beautiful melodic motif that
James Holden himself would have been proud to create, sits effortlessly
between two bass-fuelled movements providing groove, energy and dynamism in
equal measures as it rises and falls against Moog like arpeggios and soft
filtered and breathy stabs. A chunky kick-snare combination find itself
partnered with a subtle hi-hat percussion section that provides further
head-shaking joy in a track that will have club goers fuelled with ecstasy.
A brand new twin-track EP from Excession has ensured that "Twilight" is a
particularly bright place in its glowing "Amber" light. AandR by Jay Epoch
