▓████▓▌ sounds even better! This is hardly surprising when ▓▌
▓████▓▌ you consider that this smooth-listening compilation ▓▌
▓████▓▌ was put together by Daniela Romano and Laurent ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Balendras (producer pair behind the best-selling ▓▌
▓████▓▌ CafΘ de Flore compilation in 2002). "Paris Fetiche ▓▌
▓████▓▌ is an album for love, an album for lovers, an album ▓▌
▓████▓▌ destined for those who dream about Paris!" claims ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Daniela, summing up the sensual marketing concept ▓▌
▓████▓▌ in a single sentence. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Ms. Romano was formerly responsible for soundtrack ▓▌
▓████▓▌ music at Studio Canal and Laurent Balendras is ▓▌
▓████▓▌ currently artistic director for Universal ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Publishing. Putting their heads together, these two ▓▌
▓████▓▌ French experts let their passion for Paris and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ French 'chanson' act as a guiding force, putting ▓▌
▓████▓▌ together a compilation of songs irrespective of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ era. In fact, Romano and Balendras delved freely ▓▌
▓████▓▌ into the 50s, the 60s and the 90s, adding a touch ▓▌
▓████▓▌ of contemporary sounds here and there. The 22 ▓▌
▓████▓▌ tracks on Paris Fetiche are performed by a variety ▓▌
▓████▓▌ of artists from the current music scene as well as ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the stars of yesteryear. And, while the majority of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the artists featured on the compilation are from ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the French-speaking world, there are also half a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ dozen British and American singers who have added ▓▌
▓████▓▌ French classics to their repertoire over the years. ▓▌

▓████▓▌ Whereas on the Cafe de Flore compilation Romano and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Balendras were restricted to choosing tracks with ▓▌
▓████▓▌ links to the legendary Left Bank cafe, this time ▓▌
▓████▓▌ round they enjoyed complete carte blanche. And one ▓▌
▓████▓▌ of Paris Fetiche's principle charms is that its ▓▌
▓████▓▌ list of featured artists contains a whole stack of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ surprises! The opening track on the album is an ▓▌
▓████▓▌ original reworking of the Francis Lemarque classic, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ A Paris, recorded by fast-rising new French star ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Polo. A few songs later, listeners are overwhelmed ▓▌
▓████▓▌ by the haunting vocals of Nino Ferrer, performing a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ stupendous French version of It's A Man's World a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ timely reminder of one of the greatest blues ▓▌
▓████▓▌ artists France ever had! Nana Mouskouri puts in a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ surprise appearance on Paris Fetiche, too, with her ▓▌
▓████▓▌ rendition of the Serge Gainsbourg classic Les yeux ▓▌
▓████▓▌ pour pleurer which could have come straight out of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ a weepy Michel Audiard movie! ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Alongside Mouskouri, Ferrer and a host of other ▓▌
▓████▓▌ stars from the French 'chanson' pantheon, Romano ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and Balendras have included a fair representation ▓▌
▓████▓▌ of artists from the new French music generation ▓▌
▓████▓▌ such as Olivia Ruiz and Polo. And British and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ American singers also get a look-in with offerings ▓▌
▓████▓▌ from ex-Soft Cell frontman Marc Almond, Abbey ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Lincoln, Shirley Horn and Brenda Lee (Miss ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Dynamite). The feel is sensual, laidback and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ smoothly jazzy and one of the highlights of the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ foreign contribution has to be American blues ▓▌
▓████▓▌ 'chanteuse'Helen Merril crooning an unbelievably ▓▌
▓████▓▌ sultry version of the Barbara classic Pierre. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Slightly less surprising, but a bit of a must-have ▓▌
▓████▓▌ in terms of this compilation, is Claude Nougaro ▓▌
▓████▓▌ (who died earlier this year) singing one of his ▓▌
▓████▓▌ most beautiful ballads, Cecile ma fille. This ▓▌
▓████▓▌ contrasts nicely with German cabaret star Ute ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Lemper and French newcomer Olivia Ruiz (both of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ whom have contributed tracks from their recent solo ▓▌
▓████▓▌ albums). The Left Bank's existentialist muse ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Juliette Greco could not have been overlooked, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ either. La Greco, who has just released a new ▓▌
▓████▓▌ album, shines as one of the most famous French ▓▌
▓████▓▌ 'chanson' beacons on Paris Fetiche. And while ▓▌
▓████▓▌ legendary French 'chanson' icon Edith Piaf does not ▓▌
▓████▓▌ actually appear on the compilation herself, the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Little Sparrow is honoured thanks to Diana Ross's ▓▌
▓████▓▌ wonderfully languorous version of the Piaf classic ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Mon homme (recorded in 1972). Veteran French rocker ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Eddy Mitchell also puts in a surprise appearance ▓▌
▓████▓▌ with an unexpectedly swing version of Paris au mois ▓▌

▓████▓▌ Meanwhile, the Paris Fetiche compilation also pays ▓▌

▓████▓▌ kissing a society beauty's hand and "rubbing his ▓▌
▓████▓▌ lips against her diamonds"! De Phazz add a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ contemporary edge to proceedings after that with ▓▌

▓████▓▌ attempting to weather the storm of economic crisis, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ new releases are aimed at clearly defined sectors ▓▌

▓████▓▌ Rendez-vous in its international version. "We had ▓▌
▓████▓▌ to come up with a title which could be understood ▓▌
▓████▓▌ in all (or most) languages and which was easy to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ pronounce," explains Philippe Savoir, who was ▓▌
▓████▓▌ responsible for the graphic design of the CD ▓▌
▓████▓▌ booklet. Montand, Chevalier and Greco are thus ▓▌
▓████▓▌ accompanied by images of Le Moulin Rouge, Bastille, ▓▌
