For many singers, the job of making
someone else sound good is a common stop
on the road to stardom. JC Chasez,
Shakira, Dallas Austin, Thalia, Celine
Dion, Ricky Martin, Celia Cruz and Gloria
Estefan are just a few of the stars who
have benefited from DELÆs handiwork as a
producer, drum programmer and even music
video eye candy. But with the release of
his long overdue debut CD, Go All Night,
DEL is eager to embrace the spotlight
following nearly a decade of paying his
dues behind the scenes of the music
industry. Smooth, sly and slick, DELÆs
songs are infused with the kind of
delightfully mischievous playboy sass
that guys can relate to and women find
irresistible.
A Miami native whoÆs based in Charlotte,
North Carolina, DEL, 27, decided that
music was his calling at age 13. ôI had
neighbors who were in a band and I used
to sneak into their garage so I could
learn how to play all their
instrumentsùdrums, piano, keyboards and
guitar,ö he recalls. But for DEL music
was more than just a hobby, it was a
means to escape his troubled childhood.
ôIÆve sort of been on my own since I was
11,ö he explains. ôIf you lived the
lifestyle that I lived as a youngster,
youÆd want to get out as soon as you
could too. I had a crazy stepfather who
was very abusive. And although my mom was
around, she was incoherent because of
drugs and stuff like that.ö
Following a brief stint with the
short-lived Miami-based boy band
Fourplay, DEL began producing local R&B
artists in his hometown. ôThatÆs when
Gloria Estefan and a lot of Spanish
labels started finding out about me,ö
says DEL, whoÆs of mixed African-American
and Puerto Rican heritage. ôOnce Gloria
finds out about you, every Spanish artist
and their mother wants to work with you,
which opened the door for me to develop
my craft as a drum machine programmer
while working with artists like Celia
Cruz and Thalia.ö
Meantime, DEL was also recruited to
appear in a number of music videos,
including ôShe Bangsö by Ricky Martin,
ShakiraÆs ôMequedes Tuö and ôA New Day
Has Comeö by Celine Dion. DELÆs small
screen cameos soon led to roles as an
extra in blockbuster films such as Bad
Boys 2 and Out of Time. ôAround that same
time, I got into the club scene really
big time for about two and a half years,ö
he says. But before long, DEL returned to
his first loveùmusic. ôI got into
assisting projects and doing
internships,ö he explains, ôwhich is how
I ended up working with Dallas Austin, JC
Chasez, Scott Storch and the Diaz
Brothers.
