This special documentary explores the intricate symbolism and superstitions
surrounding royal funerals and how the perception of the monarchy can be deeply
affected by these spectacles of death. In 1603, when Elizabeth I's funeral
effigies were carried through the city, they resembled her so much that the
crowds thought that she had survived after all. The fact that her successor,
James I of England and James VI of Scotland, agreed to allow the great Tudor
queen to be laid to rest next to her sister, her mortal enemy Bloody Mary, is
now seen as an indication of things to come. Almost 300 years later, Queen
Victoria planned her funeral meticulously. Her written instructions of 1897
opted for the white military ceremony which eventually took place in 1901 on
an unprecedented scale. She also asked for specific items to be placed in
her coffin, including a plaster cast of her husband Albert's hand and a
picture of her faithful ghillie John Brown. Queen Elizabeth II was only 25
in the early months of 1952 when her beloved father George VI died and she
became Queen. They were very close and despite his funeral being transmitted
over the wireless, it was still a private affair. In contrast, the funeral
of the people's princess 45 years later was a very public affair. On 6th
September 1997, it seemed that the whole world was grief-stricken as they
watched the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales. Most people remember exactly
where they were when they heard the news of her death and the funeral changed
the British royal family forever.
