Lyrical leader of the original Furious Five and founder of a
splinter version of the group during the mid-80s, Melle Mel wrote
many of the legendary raps featured on Grandmaster Flash tracks.
Born Melvin Glover, he and his brother Nate (aka Kidd Creole) (not
the Caribbean dance-popster of the same name) joined up with Cowboy
(Keith Wiggins) in 1978 to form the Three MC's, with production
handled by Grandmaster Flash (Joseph Saddler). After Scorpio
(originally Mr. Ness, aka Ed Morris) and Raheim (Guy Williams)
joined up as well, the group recorded two singles (one as the
Younger Generation and Flash & the Five) before they became
Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five and recorded the magnificent
"Superappin'" for Enjoy, owned by R&B legend Bobby Robinson..
"White Lines (Don't Do It)" was released as a 12" in 1983 on Sugar
Hill Records. The song, which warns against the dangers of cocaine,
addiction, and drug smuggling, is one of Melle Mel's signature
tracks. The bassline is sampled from a performance of the Sugar Hill
house band covering "Cavern", a single by post-punk band Liquid
Liquid. When originally released on Sugar Hill, the record was
credited to Grandmaster & Melle Mel (some international issues even
credited Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mel). This was done to mislead
the general public into believing that Grandmaster Flash
participated on the record, when in fact he played no part and had
already left the Sugar Hill Records label the previous year.
This 12-inch came out 1990 in the UK, featuring remix work by Dutch
DJ phenomenon Ben Liebrand (Michael Jackson, Tavares, Bill Withers)
plus the original 7-minute version.
