│║ Description : ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ôàthe gas is nice, but the needleÆs better. ║ │
│║ Grandma.ö ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ To my thinking, there were three major labels in ║ │
│║ 1980 savvy enough see the forest through the ║ │
│║ trees, and beyond that the writing on the wall, ║ │
│║ and then the power surge that was sparking from ║ │
│║ its every electrical outlet. Now with all kinds ║ │
│║ of 20/20 hindsight, we wonder why it was so hard ║ │
│║ to spot, but you have to realize how anorexic ║ │
│║ the pickins were. The rags of the time like ║ │
│║ Circus, Melody Maker, and NME did their best ║ │
│║ (well, at least the last two did) to bring ║ │
│║ attention to new wellsprings of heavy music, but ║ │
│║ it wasnÆt often labels, especially the top dogs, ║ │
│║ listened. One that did was EMI û yep, the ones ║ │
│║ lucky enough to tickle MaidenÆs taint with a ║ │
│║ contract also took chances with hardy Saxon and ║ │
│║ even Ethel the goddamn Frog, not to mention ║ │
│║ ultra-important samplers Metal For Muthas 1&2 ║ │
│║ and semi-important Muthas Pride (which featured ║ │
│║ Quartz and White Spirit most prominently). ║ │
│║ Another was Bronze ûno, the labelÆs name didnÆt ║ │
│║ ring gongs like the household majors, but with ║ │
│║ Uriah Heep (all the way back to Æ71), ║ │
│║ Girlschool, the immortal Motorhead, and Angel ║ │
│║ WitchÆs surly debut, they were well into the ║ │
│║ thick of things. Then thereÆs MCA û the ║ │
│║ continuation of QuartzÆs career, the hallowed ║ │
│║ Brute Force compilation (w/ Diamond Head and ║ │
│║ Raven), and the starting she-bangs from White ║ │
│║ Spirit, Fist (UK), and Tygers of Pan Tang. What ║ │
│║ does this really have to do with Wild Cat? ║ │
│║ Almost nothing, except a) it showed the record ║ │
│║ shouldÆve had some distribution, and b) it was a ║ │
│║ halfway decent spot to get this off my chest. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Admittedly, I wanted nothing to do with this ║ │
│║ band for awhile, mostly by screwed logic based ║ │
│║ on their mega-gay name, spelled awfully with the ║ │
│║ æyÆ, and what the hell was a pan tang anyway? ║ │
│║ Plus I probably overheard one of the goofier ║ │
│║ tracks from the The Wreck-age album or ║ │
│║ something, but the catty album covers werenÆt ║ │
│║ all that bad, so who knows? Anyway, with water ║ │
│║ under the bridge, sooner or later I floated by ║ │
│║ on a raft and saw what I was missing. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Wild Cat, even if it had been cursed with a ║ │
│║ doofy cover, is quite the seasoned affair ║ │
│║ despite being the groupÆs first shake æo the ║ │
│║ rattle. ItÆs got that primordial, new-in-bloom ║ │
│║ energy that seems to spit all over The Ramones's ║ │
│║ End of the Century, Krokus's Metal Rendez-vous, ║ │
│║ the two same-year sleepers by Witchfynde, and ║ │
│║ for me, British Steel as well, and takes the ║ │
│║ hard-ish rock of Pat Benatar's Crimes of ║ │
│║ Passion, Queen's The Game, and Triumph's ║ │
│║ Progressions of Power and makes it seem even ║ │
│║ less invitingly fresh to the impending ║ │
│║ metalheads smooching the kitty on the jacket. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Musically, there seem to be no brawls in the ║ │
│║ sandbox where membership is concerned. ║ │
│║ Compliments fly in fistfuls of grit as on-the- ║ │
│║ money chops are thought-out and then provoked ║ │
│║ into the albumÆs ring of managed violence. Robb ║ │
│║ Weir is a confident axeman who gets zero ║ │
│║ recognition nowadays (like so many) as bassist ║ │
│║ Rocky and æsticks, kicks, and gongÆ Big Brian ║ │
│║ Dick provide a burly, hot-blooded backdrop to ║ │
│║ the whole thing. Meanwhile voxman Jess Cox, a ║ │
│║ guy who achieved some V.I.P. status in the ║ │
│║ underground for reasons I still do not ║ │
│║ understand, is okay with his two pitch throwing ║ │
│║ style, but is unfortunately the one knuckleball ║ │
│║ of the bunch that doesnÆt sail in for a strike. ║ │
│║ HeÆs adequate enough here, but mere adequacy ║ │
│║ would prove not enough for next yearÆs ║ │
│║ Spellbound lp. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ But hereÆs the kicker. Wild CatÆs songs, despite ║ │
│║ everything told above, mingle a little too close ║ │
│║ to one another mentally and sonically, providing ║ │
│║ ten tracks of similar, one-lane sound with ║ │
│║ really no clear stand-outs among them. ItÆs like ║ │
│║ theyÆre all surfing the same wave, flipping and ║ │
│║ whipping the board around and having a good ║ │
│║ time, but theyÆre all doing the same tricks. ║ │
│║ ItÆs a solid, white-crested wave no doubt, but ║ │
│║ itÆs easy to breeze right through this without ║ │
│║ realizing. The gradual speed-up of the long-ish ║ │
│║ ôKillersö is a highlight, as is the tenuous bite ║ │
│║ of ôBadger Badgerö after the breakdown and ║ │
│║ buildup, and there are a few others, but you ║ │
│║ have to be on the lookout for them even while ║ │
│║ just rearranging your underwear drawer. However, ║ │
│║ if they were to somehow æloseÆ one track from ║ │
│║ this, IÆd have to root for ôDonÆt Touch Me ║ │
│║ Thereö and its stupid, future Poison/Crue ║ │
│║ chorus. But donÆt fret, as with the vocals ║ │
│║ Spellbound fixes the standardized structure ║ │
│║ trouble. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ So letÆs hear it for frigginÆ MCA, the fresh ║ │
│║ face of nwobhm, and Pan TangÆs Tygers. ║ │
