────■ DESCRiPTiON ■────
In 1999, Natalie spent her university summer holidays working as a volunteer in a
Romanian orphanage, which housed abandoned babies and children up to four years old,
victims of Nicolae CeausescuÆs regime. Despite having been warned not to make personal
connections with the children as the separation would be too painful when she went
back home, Natalie developed a special bond with a shy but cheeky, three-year-old
girl named Mirela. Having to leave Mirela in the squalor of the orphanage haunted
Natalie for years, so in 2011 she went back to find out what had become of her. What
she found shocked her. As revealed in her previous documentary, she found Mirela
alive, but living with nine other orphans in a cramped apartment. Worse still, all
were severely mentally and physically disabled after years of growing up in an institution.
Natalie made a promise to build a new home for the young orphan who had stolen her
heart all those years ago. She would need a plot of land, planning permission and
funding. This film follows NatalieÆs ambitious and emotional attempts to personally
raise the ú187,000 required to build a new home and establish a proper system of
care û a daunting challenge, especially during a period of severe economic downturn.
Natalie also faces a race against time. Mirela is approaching her 18th birthday, when
there is the very real possibility that she will be transferred to one of RomaniaÆs
notorious state adult institutions. Can Natalie raise the money in time to change
the lives of these young orphans forever?
