│║ This is a laid back album from a band whose main ║ │
│║ strength is all-guns-blazing speed. Lead ║ │
│║ guitarist Paul Gilbert is still shredding as ║ │
│║ gleefully as ever, but the overall soundscape is ║ │
│║ a lot less exciting, and a lot less intense. The ║ │
│║ tempos have slowed to a comparative crawl. The ║ │
│║ riffs are toned down, and rarely catch the ║ │
│║ listener's attention. For much of the time, ║ │
│║ there are no double tracked rhythm guitars, ║ │
│║ depriving the music of the metallic weight ║ │
│║ required to live up to the Racer X legacy, and ║ │
│║ contradicting the record's very title, Getting ║ │
│║ Heavier. This is actually Racer X's least heavy ║ │
│║ album so far, so the album loses five points for ║ │
│║ misleading potential listeners. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The adrenalized aggression of early Racer X, ║ │
│║ immortalized in speed metal tracks such as ║ │
│║ Hotter Than Fire and Scarified, has given way to ║ │
│║ a laid back approach that is bland in ║ │
│║ comparison. The previous two reunion albums were ║ │
│║ a worthy continuation of the band's career, ║ │
│║ although not as frenzied as Street Lethal and ║ │
│║ Second Heat. They displayed a mature band who ║ │
│║ had developed without compromising their ║ │
│║ infectious songwriting sensibilities. Getting ║ │
│║ Heavier, however, is a step back, a move away ║ │
│║ from maturity. Endless interchangeable ║ │
│║ pentatonic groove/rock riffs predominate, few of ║ │
│║ which are genuinely strong enough to anchor the ║ │
│║ songs. There is little memorability in the ║ │
│║ attempted hooks. Most of the note choices and ║ │
│║ riffs are fundamentally inoffensive, and do ║ │
│║ little to excite or intrigue. This music moves ║ │
│║ to a bluesy rhythm, treading well-worn and ║ │
│║ entirely predictable paths, and stripping the ║ │
│║ band of its edge. Racer X is all edge. That's ║ │
│║ the point. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ This album isn't outright bad, just mediocre. If ║ │
│║ you've never heard Paul Gilbert play guitar ║ │
│║ before, you'll be in for a treat. If you have, ║ │
│║ this is unlikely to offer you anything new. The ║ │
│║ title and one-chord main riff of Heaven in '74 ║ │
│║ represent all that is wrong with this album. ║ │
│║ This is regressive rock. Racer X are trying to ║ │
│║ emulate their rock heroes of the 1970s, fifteen ║ │
│║ years after surpassing them. Creatively ║ │
│║ speaking, the band have not grown - they have ║ │
│║ shrunk. Their ambition has receded. ║ │
