This collection of reworks from Jamie "Jimpster" Odell displays the
musical range of this incredibly talented beat merchant. Not all of
his mixes grab you instantly, but instead slowly pull you in, due to
their technical impressiveness and appeasing melodies. His version of
Hajime Yoshizawa's "Endless Bow" sees effortless synths, excitable
jazz keys and a groovesome bass propel the track into another
dimension. Sista Widey's "Inspecta" gets a refined and quite English
dancehall refit, where an obtuse bass spits and splutters at held
back bashment percussion and FX twiddles. The "Jazz Mix" of Aelita's
"OMFO" sees blissed strings, a drooping bass and moving synthetics
combine on an incredibly relaxing rerub. This doesn't have quite the
appeal of an artist album and a few of the mixes are perhaps a little
too pedestrian, but the release of this collection should make the
wait for his follow-up to "Domestic Science", slated for a release
early next year, a little easier.
Jimpster is the sound of abstract electonic jazz fusion masterminded
by musician, producer and Freerange founder Jamie Odell.
Having initialy recorded 3 EP's for Freerange, Jimpster was signed by
Kudos for whom he recorded his highly acclaimed debut LP 'Messages
From The Hub'. The album displays perfectly the way in which Jamie
fuses live musicians and instruments with a contemporary approach to
production which forms the blueprint for his Jimpster tracks.
As a leading figure in the so-called 'Nu Jazz' scene, Jamie has been
in demand for remix and co-production projects including remixes for
Lamb, Mixmaster Morris, Wai Wan, Airto Moriera as well as producing
for Coldcut and co-writing with Kirk Degiorgio.
An integral part of Jimpster is the ability to perform live where,
along with fellow musicians and VJ's, they can create an experience
which goes way beyond that of listening to a record. Gigs in Berlin,
Lisbon, Tokyo and Dublin have all helped to gain recognition for
music which blurs the boundary between jazz and contemporary club
music.
