│║ Description : ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Riding just a few steps ahead of Masterplan's ║ │
│║ recent studio offering "Time To Be King", this ║ │
│║ little single follows the typical format of what ║ │
│║ they've done consistently since their inception, ║ │
│║ placing a catchy song on the A-side and ║ │
│║ proceeding to remove an insignificant amount of ║ │
│║ time from it in an alternate version, serving no ║ │
│║ other purpose than to sate the short attention ║ │
│║ spans of today's brain dead rock radio addict. ║ │
│║ I've been pretty loud in my disapproval of this ║ │
│║ approach to putting your first foot forward, but ║ │
│║ this outfit seems hell bent on sticking to their ║ │
│║ guns so there isn't much to be done except for ║ │
│║ hope that it isn't as bad as it could be. In ║ │
│║ this particular case my hope is not misplaced as ║ │
│║ the band has learned a thing or two from their ║ │
│║ early days. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ "Far From The End Of The World" is a strict, by ║ │
│║ the numbers power metal song in the vain of ║ │
│║ "Kind Hearted Light" (the B-side from the first ║ │
│║ EP "Enlighten Me"), which itself stuck pretty ║ │
│║ close to the established tradition of Helloween ║ │
│║ and Stratovarius. The progression of the song is ║ │
│║ really easy to follow if one has experience with ║ │
│║ what Stratovarius did on songs like "Hunting ║ │
│║ High And Low" and "Eagleheart", although the ║ │
│║ lead keyboard line has been omitted in favor of ║ │
│║ an atmospheric keyboard backdrop and a heavier, ║ │
│║ down-tuned guitar sound that takes into account ║ │
│║ the modern sensibilities that Masterplan has ║ │
│║ tended closer to. The only other thing apart ║ │
│║ from this that really makes this song distinct ║ │
│║ is Jorn's heavily recognizable vocal approach, ║ │
│║ marrying the husky depth and gravely goodness of ║ │
│║ David Coverdale with the versatility and high ║ │
│║ range of Ronnie Dio. Things get a little bit ║ │
│║ more original when the half-ballad B-side ║ │
│║ "Lonely Winds Of War" kicks in with a serene ║ │
│║ keyboard intro with a catchy flute melody that ║ │
│║ will proceed to recur as the song's chorus ║ │
│║ melody. It's still a pretty standard slower, ║ │
│║ groove oriented song with an easy to follow ║ │
│║ format, but it also affords Jorn more ║ │
│║ opportunities to show his vocal abilities, and ║ │
│║ is one of the richer songs in flamboyant, ║ │
│║ bluesy, rocking lead guitar goodness courtesy of ║ │
│║ Roland Grapow. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ In this day and age, I wonder why bands like ║ │
│║ this insist on including single versions of ║ │
│║ songs with such meager differences from the LP ║ │
│║ versions, considering that only the radio ║ │
│║ stations would be using it and the other two ║ │
│║ songs are available on the LP. Leave us not ║ │
│║ forget that this single version exists due to ║ │
│║ your average Joe being so profoundly stricken ║ │
│║ with Attention Deficit Disorder that 14 seconds ║ │
│║ makes the difference between being able to ║ │
│║ listen to a song or not. Nevertheless, I don't ║ │
│║ have the heart to completely trash this as the ║ │
│║ two songs on here are solid and a pretty good ║ │
│║ representation of the quality level of "Time To ║ │
│║ Be King". ║ │
│║ ║ │
