Their ║ │ │║ 2011 offering, Head of the Pack was a great ║ │ │║ stripped down, straight-ahead metal assault that ║ │ │║ hearkened back to the halcyon days of metal; ║ │ │║ channeling the arts of such acts as Iron Maiden, ║ │ │║ Judas Priest and Mot÷rhead. The anticipation of ║ │ │║ this beast should be no small matter and should ║ │ │║ provide an ample supply of no false metal. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ Not wasting anytime the album is kick started by ║ │ │║ ôHour to Liveö. Skullfist masterfully picks up ║ │ │║ right where they left off with blueprint fully ║ │ │║ enabled: blazing guitars, frantic drum work from ║ │ │║ new member Chris Steve (ex-Cauldron) and an ║ │ │║ over-the-top vocal display. However, it sounds ║ │ │║ like a bit of studio tampering has pushed Jackie ║ │ │║ SlaughterÆs vocals back in the mixùnot entirely ║ │ │║ bad, but slightly diminishing the frenetic ║ │ │║ quality heard on past efforts. ôCall of the ║ │ │║ Wildö has an especially solid groove along with ║ │ │║ chorus guitar fills that emulate Iron Maiden; ║ │ │║ always a sound choice. Lots of serious fret work ║ │ │║ here from Jackie and Johnny Exciter. Title track ║ │ │║ ôChasing the Dreamö however, sees the tarnish ║ │ │║ that over production can leave; riddled with a ║ │ │║ generic disposition and easily overlooked. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ There are several surprises thrown into Chasing ║ │ │║ the Dream that break the album up perfectly. The ║ │ │║ first of which is a re-recording of ôSign of the ║ │ │║ Warriorö that appeared on their 2010 Heavier ║ │ │║ than Metal EP. While it was probably not ║ │ │║ necessary for a redo, this is clearly the ║ │ │║ superior version as the original is rather murky ║ │ │║ and unpolished. The second little nugget comes ║ │ │║ in the form of ôShredÆs not Deadö, an ║ │ │║ instrumental track that is devastatingly unique. ║ │ │║ This one runs the gamut from soaring guitar ║ │ │║ riffs to Casey SladeÆs cranked up bass fills and ║ │ │║ finally precise drum breaks. Quite an unexpected ║ │ │║ little treat right there. ôMean Street Riderö ║ │ │║ warrants mention as it opens with a soundbite of ║ │ │║ Jackie Slaughter breaking his neck ║ │ │║ skateboardingùsometimes you have to pay to play. ║ │ │║ None-the-less this is a rocking, no-nonsense way ║ │ │║ to close out the album. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ After several spins of Chasing the Dream a ║ │ │║ gradual immersion began to occur; though there ║ │ │║ is a part of me that just wasnÆt quite sold at ║ │ │║ first. This album continued to crawl back into ║ │ │║ the CD player, even after repeated spins. Deep ║ │ │║ down the hesitancy to embrace this album ║ │ │║ probably stemmed from a longing for that raw, ║ │ │║ primal sound heard on Head of the Pack as ║ │ │║ opposed to a more modern, highly produced album. ║ │ │║ In any case, all of the negative noise is easily ║ │ │║ silenced by beholding the phenomenal material ║ │ │║ within.
