░╣░ Formed in 1977. File under: Post-punk pop / New Wave. ░╠░
░╣░ ░╠░
░╣░ Original line-up: David Studdert (lead vocals, rhythm ░╠░
░╣░ guitar), Angus Douglas (lead guitar), Geoff Marsh (bass, vocals), ░╠░
░╣░ Robert Whittle (drums) ░╠░
░╣░ ░╠░
░╣░ Tactics albums: My Houdini (GREEN, 1981), Glebe (GREEN, ░╠░
░╣░ 1982), The Bones Of Barry Harrison (GREEN, 1982), Blue and White ░╠░
░╣░ Future Whale (Folding Chair, 1986), The Great Gusto ░╠░
░╣░ (Regular/Festival, 1990), The History of the Sky (compilation, ░╠░
░╣░ Folding Chair/PolyGram, 1996); Dave Studdert's Mumbo Jumbo album: ░╠░
░╣░ Post Hypnotic Suggestion (Folding Chair/PolyGram, 1996). ░╠░
░╣░ ░╠░
░╣░ ░╠░
░╣░ History ░╠░
░╣░ The small new wave scene centred around Canberra during the late ░╠░
░╣░ 1970s gave rise to a number of bands like Young Docteurs, The ░╠░
░╣░ Naturals, No Concept, Quintrex Bop, The Word and the most ░╠░
░╣░ unconventional and adventurous of the lot, Tactics. Although not ░╠░
░╣░ punk in the traditional sense, Tactics' music was closer in spirit ░╠░
░╣░ to the art-punk of the likes of New York band Talking Heads, and ░╠░
░╣░ UK outfits like Wire and Gang Of Four. ░╠░
░╣░ ░╠░
░╣░ The band's hyperkinetic sound was unlike anything heard in ░╠░
░╣░ Australia at the time. Writer Clinton Walker described it as ░╠░
░╣░ `psychedelic/reggae influenced post-punk pop', which was as close ░╠░
░╣░ as anyone got to an accurate description. Singer David Studdert's ░╠░
░╣░ spiky `strangled cat' vocal style was definitely unusual. He had ░╠░
░╣░ formed the band in 1977, and its quirky, embryonic sound met with ░╠░
░╣░ virtual indifference in Canberra. Tactics moved to Sydney in ░╠░
░╣░ September 1978 (at the invitation of The Thought Criminals) and ░╠░
░╣░ built an inner-city cult following. Ingrid Spielman joined on piano. ░╠░
░╣░ ░╠░
░╣░ The band's early records, the `Long Weekend' EP (on the band's own ░╠░
░╣░ Folding Chair label, June 1979) and the single `Hole in My ░╠░
░╣░ Life'/`Outdoors' (on Doublethink, July 1980), suffered from poor ░╠░
░╣░ sound quality and really only hinted at the band's potential. A ░╠░
░╣░ much punchier, re-recorded version of `Buried Country' (from `Long ░╠░
░╣░ Weekend') was included on the band's acclaimed debut album, My ░╠░
░╣░ Houdini, on the GREEN label (issued February 1981). The album was ░╠░
░╣░ full of frantic energy, scratchy guitars, uneasy melodies, ░╠░
░╣░ challenging songs and astute lyrical observations. It produced the ░╠░
░╣░ single `Second Language'/`Long Story' (March 1981). ░╠░
░╣░ ░╠░
░╣░ The band's second album, Glebe and its single `Standing by the ░╠░
░╣░ Window'/`Gold Watch' (November 1981) were departures from the ░╠░
░╣░ earlier sound, featuring a stronger reggae/dub influence. The 1982 ░╠░
░╣░ Tactics line-up comprised Studdert, Douglas, Marsh, Duncan ░╠░
░╣░ McKenzie (keyboards) and Michael Farmer (drums). The Bones of ░╠░
░╣░ Barry Harrison album (August 1982) comprised live cuts from 1979 ░╠░
░╣░ to 1982, but the overall effect was lessened due to the low-fi ░╠░
░╣░ sound on offer. Studdert broke the band up in 1983, but re-emerged ░╠░
░╣░ a year later with a new line-up comprising Angus Douglas, Nicky ░╠░
░╣░ Baruch (vocals, percussion, flute), Snajik (bass) and Tony Donohue ░╠░
░╣░ (drums; ex-Same). That line-up issued the single `Fat Man'/`Shark ░╠░
░╣░ Bed Rally' (July 1985) on the Waterfront label. ░╠░
░╣░ ░╠░
░╣░ The November 1986 album Blue and White Future Whale produced the ░╠░
░╣░ single `Coat Tails'/`Committee of Love'. By the time Tactics ░╠░
░╣░ entered the studio in 1989 to record their fifth album, the ░╠░
░╣░ line-up comprised Studdert, Snajik, Gary Manley (guitar, piano) ░╠░
░╣░ and Malcolm MacCallum (drums, keyboards), with Go-Between Amanda ░╠░
░╣░ Brown and Robert (surname not known) guesting on violin and ░╠░
░╣░ backing vocals, and trumpet respectively. The Great Gusto ░╠░
░╣░ (November 1989) was another ambitious release, but it sank without ░╠░
░╣░ a trace. It produced the singles `Coalface'/`Birthday Girl', `Know ░╠░
░╣░ it All' (October) and `Turn' (March 1990). ░╠░
░╣░ ░╠░
░╣░ Studdert laid Tactics to rest in 1990 and flew to the UK at the ░╠░
░╣░ invitation of now-defunct English independent label Red Flame ░╠░
░╣░ (which had issued albums by The Moodists and Laughing Clowns). The ░╠░
░╣░ Red Flame deal fell through, and Studdert played with a number of ░╠░
░╣░ bands on the London scene. He eventually formed Dave Studdert's ░╠░
░╣░ Mumbo Jumbo with Adam Blake (guitars), Louis Vause (piano, organ; ░╠░
░╣░ ex-Dave Graney with the Coral Snakes), Louise Elliot (sax, flute; ░╠░
░╣░ ex-Laughing Clowns), Paul Jayashina (trumpet), Chris Lee ░╠░
░╣░ (trumpet), Paul Pember (bass) and Chris Wyles (drums). Mumbo Jumbo ░╠░
░╣░ issued its debut CD EP, The Dead Man's Hat, in late 1994. Studdert ░╠░
░╣░ followed that up with the Post Hypnotic Suggestion album and the ░╠░
░╣░ `Addicted Police Dog' CD EP in October 1996. Both releases ░╠░
░╣░ featured a blend of jazz, reggae, rock and psychedelia which was ░╠░
░╣░ ironic and driven, yet funky, accessible, intelligent and ░╠░
░╣░ entertaining. The band undertook a brief tour of Australia in ░╠░
░╣░ November, which also coincided with the release of the Tactics ░╠░
░╣░ anthology The History of the Sky. ░╠░
