▓ Lourau is a surprise for me: if his previous records ▓
▓ with the bands called Groove Gang and Gambit had left ▓
▓ me rather indifferent for their not so much marked ▓
▓ originality, this The rise doesnÆt pass unnoticed. ▓
▓ Lourau, 31 years old French saxophonist, till now has ▓
▓ moved in that field now called ônu-jazzö, made mostly ▓
▓ by electronic, drum ænÆ bass and dance, coming to an ▓
▓ agreement that kind of music performed by musicians ▓
▓ like St. Germain, Erik Truffaz or by the artists of ▓
▓ F-Communications. I donÆt want to belittle or to ▓
▓ judge negatively the nu-jazz phenomenon and the work ▓
▓ of these musicians, which moreover are appreciable ▓
▓ mostly when they keep themselves far from the purely ▓
▓ commercial field, or rather when they try to ▓
▓ undertake their experimentation founded on ôdanceö ▓
▓ forms, but itÆs clear that with this CD, for one of ▓
▓ the most important European jazz label, Lourau gives ▓
▓ a really convincing proof of his maturity as ▓
▓ instrumentalist, but more as composer, considering ▓
▓ that eight tracks on eleven are written by him. ▓
▓ Certainly we cannot say that The rise is a ▓
▓ traditional jazz record (word now used only as a pure ▓
▓ convention) considering how much it is stepped by ▓
▓ influences derived from other cultures, mostly ▓
▓ Balkan, middle-oriental and Cuban, but in it the ▓
▓ solid bases over which is built are clear and ▓
▓ legible: improvisation and construction of pieces and ▓
▓ solos. The integration among these different elements ▓
▓ is evident and itÆs due without doubt for the good ▓
▓ interplay by different musicians even if they come ▓
▓ from cultures very far each other: Lourau is very ▓
▓ clever to make as a catalyst and to talk together at ▓
▓ par, without any loss of attention or style. ▓
▓ This CD offers many moments able to show all of ▓
▓ this: if in Bulkamer we can find a wonderful duet ▓
▓ between the soprano sax and the kaval (a kind of ▓
▓ Balkan flute) of Bulgarian Lutzkanov with the ▓
▓ excellent work at piano by Zulfikarpasic where the ▓
▓ Balkan soul emerges, in Ginger bread the Cuban ▓
▓ flavour percussions stand out supported by Di ▓
▓ GiustoÆs piano optimal as rhythmic but also ▓
▓ authoritative soloist. Maybe the track able to merge ▓
▓ these two ways to mean music properly far between ▓
▓ them, is the intense and original ôEl gato porte±oö ▓
▓ in which Lourau shows off all his expressiveness on ▓
▓ tenor sax. ▓
▓ Someone else tracks that itÆs right to point up ▓
▓ are: Tu mi turbi for its fine insistent melody over ▓
▓ which the flute of the Algerian Malik Mezzadri ▓
▓ emerges and The rise (track dedicated by Lourau to ▓
▓ his father recently deceased) where the reiterated ▓
▓ exposition of the melancholic theme by the sax and ▓
▓ piano produces a dramatic crescendo becomes acute ▓
▓ with the real valuable solos by them, which show all ▓
▓ the musicians cleverness. ▓
▓ The two souls, Balkan and Cuban, which permeate ▓
▓ almost like a double ribs this The rise could make ▓
▓ thinking that this is a dispersive and disjointed ▓
▓ work, but its value is exactly here: Lourau and his ▓
▓ guys were able to manufacture absolutely enjoyable ▓
▓ and intelligent music starting from distant ▓
▓ preambles, doing the originality their strong point, ▓
▓ convincing mostly of their ability in assimilation, ▓
▓ elaboration and final restitution of a kind of ▓
▓ innovative music with a sure jazz mark. ▓
