▌ ░ ▐ The global succes of bob marley and the wailers was truly a ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ phenomenon of the latter part ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ of the 1970s and early 1980s by which time his music had reached ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ people right around the world. ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ Songs such as 'sun is shining', 'concrete jungle', 'trench town ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ roch' and 'small axe' are part ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ of global music consciousness: what few people realise is that ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ bob actually recorded these songs at the very start ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ of the decade. ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ The late 1960s and early 1970s were a time of extraordinary ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ creativity for bob whowas by this time in his ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ mid 20s. Under contract to the afro-american JAD records, he ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ recorded with most of ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ jamaicas up-and-coming producers, as well as taking creative ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ control by setting up his own tuff gong label out of ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ 127 king street (commonly knows as 'beeston street'). ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ It's only right that we start this musical journey with 'trench ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ town rock' as it was with this song that bob opened ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ his legendary concert at the lyceum in london (captured on the ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ live! album) which openend the door to mainstream succes. ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ 'Trench town rock' was originally released on the tuff gong ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ label and went on to sell over 30.000 copies in jamaica. ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ Small axe was a fruit of the bob marley/lee perry relationship - ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ as was don't rock my boat that resurfaced as 'satisfy my soul' ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ on the kaya album. ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ 'Bend down low' was an early bob marley and the wailers succes ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ that even had its own dance! In fact "bend down low" was re-cut ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ at two other sessions and tuff gong in king street continually ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ repressed this version. From a similar period 'stir it up' is a ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ lovelys ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ rocksteady piece that JAD co-owner johnny nash had an ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ international smash with. ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ Further proof of bobs creativity with lee perry is to be found ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ in the likes of 'kaya' (an ode to the joys of top grade ganja), ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ the big ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ jamaican hit 'duppy conqueror' (duppy being a sort of jamaican ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ ghost), '400 years', 'sun is shining' (taken back to the dance ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ floor in the ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ 1990s by funk star deluxe) and 'man to man' (which reappeared as ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ 'who the cap fits' in the late 1970s). ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ Bobs ability to draw on his past reservoir of hits was not just ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ confined to these tracks: 'im alright' reappeared as ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ 'nightshift' on ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ rastaman vibration and 'put it on' aooeared on burnin'. 'Put it ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ on' was originally recorded at studio 1 in the ska era, then ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ re-cut ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ with JAD and then lee perry. 'Baby we've got a date', which ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ appeared on catch a fire, was a JAD recording but the original ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ has since ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ gone missing. ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ Bob would also borrow parts of a song and recycle them, as he ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ did when part of 'freedom time' reappeared in the lyrics if ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ 'crazy baldhead'. ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ We finish with a beautiful gem - the first cut of 'pass it on' ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ which was made as an exclusive dub plate, only to be played on ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ certain sound systems. ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ It features bunny wailers lovely high tenor that is accentuated ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ by the rough and raw mix, The main body of the song ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ is the same as the version released on burnin' but with the ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ exception that the first verse is completely different. ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ The set closes with a series of 'versions' that are the rhytm ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ tracks of most the vocal tracks featured. These would appear on ▌ ░ ▐
