▓████▓▌ Of the recent releases in Canadian jazz that ▓▌
▓████▓▌ feature medium-sized bands--most of which contain ▓▌
▓████▓▌ competent playing by articulate, skilled ▓▌
▓████▓▌ musicians--Franτois ThΘberge's Elenar stands out ▓▌
▓████▓▌ for the quiet yet memorable personality of the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ compositions and arrangements. A Montreal-born reed ▓▌
▓████▓▌ player, composer and arranger, ThΘberge studied and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ worked for a time in the United States before ▓▌
▓████▓▌ moving to France to establish a career as a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ performer and teacher. With a dozen releases under ▓▌
▓████▓▌ his belt, including one featuring the music and the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ playing of Lee Konitz, ThΘberge is a veteran, and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ this latest project finds him with some committed ▓▌
▓████▓▌ long-term collaborators. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Elenar (taken from the idea of "L and R", i.e. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "Line and Rhythm") works because of the breadth of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ musical voices it exploits (clarinets, flutes, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ saxophones, and brass of all sorts) and because ▓▌
▓████▓▌ this wide palette is brought to life by distinctive ▓▌
▓████▓▌ voices: reedists Richard Lalonde, Jean Frechette, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and Yannick Rieu; trumpeter StΘphane Belmondo; ▓▌
▓████▓▌ trombonist Muhammad Abdul Al-Khabyyr; pianist Alain ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Jean-Marie; with support from a rhythm section made ▓▌
▓████▓▌ up of Paul Imm on bass and Alan Jones on drums. The ▓▌
▓████▓▌ group is augmented on "Less Sphere" by trombonist ▓▌
▓████▓▌ David Gott and on "Flies" by flutist Lionel ▓▌

▓████▓▌ From the somewhat lazy opening of the CD ▓▌
▓████▓▌ (ironically called "Chicane", from which one ▓▌
▓████▓▌ expects a scorcher), we get a slowly evolving modal ▓▌
▓████▓▌ vamp that eventually builds to some interesting ▓▌
▓████▓▌ themes and counterthemes and yields some inspired ▓▌
▓████▓▌ soloing that is sustained throughout the disc's 10 ▓▌
▓████▓▌ tunes, the most noteworthy being the Kurt ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Weill-like "Adnimals," the light modal quasi-bossa ▓▌
▓████▓▌ of "Jardim," and the gently climactic "Less ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Sphere." Rhythm and line are varied, as textures ▓▌
▓████▓▌ drop to a basic rhythm trio at times, then expand ▓▌
▓████▓▌ into backgrounds swells with interwoven ▓▌
▓████▓▌ counterpoint and choral writing, somewhat by the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ book at times, but always contemplative and often ▓▌
