1: Nowhere to Run - Martha & The Vandellas
(Holland-Dozier-Holland) : Former Motwon secretary Martha
Reeves bagged the cream of in-house writing team
Holland-Dozier-Holland's output in the early 60's before
Diana Ross and the Supremes came along. This uproarious
dancefloor anthem - about being dangerously in love -
exemplifies their seamless teamwork
2: Ruby Baby - Bjork (Lieber & Stoller) : From the pioneering
duo behind Hound Dog, Stand By Me and countless other
classics, this lesser known track reflects 50's milk-bar US
culture. Originally a hit fro the Drifters, its here given a
big-band makeover, with Bjork teaming up with a trio of
icelandic musicians
3: Help! - The Damned (Lennon & McCartney) : Clocking in at
under 2 minutes, this furious take on the 1965 Beatles hit
doesn't offer much respect for the original - Well, it is
Punk
4: Highway 61 Revisited - P J Harvey (Bob Dylan) : Here PJ
Harvey transforms the folk-rock surrealism of the original
into a blast of ferocious punk rock rage on a track which
became a highlight of her early live shows
5: All Tomorrow's Parties - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (Lou
Reed) : The Velvet Undergrounds first single was usng with
typical moodiness by Nico, but here Nick Cave has turned it
on its head, producing an upbeat, almost sing-along version
from 1986
6: Redemption Song - Joe Strummer (Bob Marley) : This
pared-down heartfelt version of the Bob Marley classic was
one of the last tracks Strummer recorded prior to his traic
death in December 2002
7: Straight to Hell - Josh Rouse (Strummer & Jones) : An
emotive version of this highlight from the album Combat Rock.
This track (exclusive to this disk) was recorded and
broadcast live in 2003 on US radio
8: Life on Mars - Neil Hannon & Yann Tiersen (David Bowie) :
A Live recording from Paris 1998 see the Divine Comedy singer
team with french composer Tiersen for a gutsy rendition of
the Bowie classic
9: You're So Good to Me - The Langley Schools Music Project
(Brian Wilson) : From a 1976 recording of a bunch of Canadian
schoolkids singing 60s pop songs, this is a charming (if
slightly off-harmonized) version of the Beach Boys single
10: All Apologies - Kathryn Williams (Kurt Cobain) : Brave,
beautiful and very different to the original. Stripped down,
acoutic and beneficial of Williams wonderful voice
11: Wild Horses - The Flying Burrito Brothers (Jagger &
Richards) : The Rolling Stones may have written it, but Gram
Parsons made it his own on this version
12: My Little Red Book - Love (Bacharach & David) : Arthur
Lee sings this tale of a newly dumped boy who take out every
girl in town but is still stuck on his ex
13: Manic Monday - The Bangles (Prince) : Written by Prince
under the alias Christopher for the LA all-girl quartet
14: Knowing Me Knowing You - The Wondermints (Abba) : The
Wondermints breathe fresh life into Abba on this track from
their ultra-rare Japanese only covers album
15: Superstition (Live) - Stevie Ray Vaughn (Stevie Wonder) :
Wonder's 1972 original made the rock world finally realise
his genius, even if the funky guitar riff actually came from
his clavinet
