The uncompromising Detroit master returns rather quickly to the
esteemed Peacefrog imprint, with a brief album that shows his respect
for a jazzier sound. Slightly more conceptual than his previous
outings, pensive live instrumentation and rich vocal touches are
favoured over the mostly sample-based hypnotic discoid and souled
grooves with which he initially found fame. "When She Follows" lays
on the jazz flavours thickly, as hot-foot brushing percussion,
innocent keys and a falling sax back the moody one's own distressed
vocals. "Rectify" sees a couple attempt to sort out their
relationship issues, over gleaming keys, drummed up rolls and a glum
live bass. "Dirty Little Bonus Beats" is a mesmerising percussive
roller that couldn't really be the work of anyone else, whilst the
reprise of "When She" sees a bracing brass, helium laced vocal
hilarity and keyed touches link up nicely. It is perhaps a little
strange that some of Kenny's most off-the-wall material is garnering
him respect and acclaim in quarters where his life-changing housified
output was mostly ignored. Nevertheless, the respect is most
definitely due, even if Kenny himself is reluctant to play ball with
the media.
