│║ With The Warriors Code Germanys Gloryful ║ │
│║ delivered a great debut last year. The untamed ║ │
│║ up-tempo old-school heavy/power metal in the ║ │
│║ tradition of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Manowar, ║ │
│║ Accept with the fitting clichs was definitely ║ │
│║ impressive and that record still finds its way ║ │
│║ to my player regularly. Also the bands strong ║ │
│║ live performances proved that we were dealing ║ │
│║ with an enthusiastic band on a mission, and that ║ │
│║ we would definitely hear more from them. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Only eleven months after the release of their ║ │
│║ debut Gloryful comes with the follow-up, Ocean ║ │
│║ Blade. Although the basic formula is still the ║ │
│║ same, Ocean Blade also shows a more serious side ║ │
│║ of the band. I dont like using the word ║ │
│║ progressive here, but the men have surely chosen ║ │
│║ for a more controlled approach. Was it mostly ║ │
│║ high-speed heavy metal what we heard on the ║ │
│║ first record, the men seem more reserved on the ║ │
│║ new material. Dont get me wrong though, because ║ │
│║ there is no shortage of speed here and we ║ │
│║ constantly get catchy power metal riffs fired at ║ │
│║ us, enforcing a neck-wrecking workout regularly. ║ │
│║ Only this time the compositions are a bit more ║ │
│║ complex, contain more variety and the melodic, ║ │
│║ strongly by Maiden-inspired guitar riddles play ║ │
│║ a bigger role. Although the album is catchy on ║ │
│║ the first turn, due to its diverse character, it ║ │
│║ does require multiple listens in order to reveal ║ │
│║ itself better. That unlike the debut by which ║ │
│║ you could turn off your mind and uninterruptedly ║ │
│║ go crazy immediately. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The production again comes from the great Dan ║ │
│║ Swano, who has naturally ensured the songs to ║ │
│║ come into their own completely and that no ║ │
│║ details remain unrevealed. On songwriting and ║ │
│║ technical matters the gentlemen have definitely ║ │
│║ progressed, and Ocean Blade is definitely a ║ │
│║ solid record. Tough when it comes to purely the ║ │
│║ feel, I lean more towards the unrestrained, ║ │
│║ youthful enthusiasm of the debut. But that, of ║ │
│║ course, is a personal matter. The fact remains ║ │
│║ that the fans of the first record, and also fans ║ │
│║ of old-school, yet contemporary-sounding, heavy ║ │
│║ and power metal will definitely appreciate this ║ │
│║ Ocean Blade. ║ │
