│║ Guitar phenomenon Timo Tolkki was a key member ║ │
│║ of one of the finest power metal bands, ║ │
│║ Stratovarius. His dexterous guitar playing is ║ │
│║ awe inspiring and very influential in the genre. ║ │
│║ His latest band Timo TolkkiÆs Avalon are back ║ │
│║ with their sophomore release, Angels of the ║ │
│║ Apocalypse. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Adopting a similar style and concept as Tobias ║ │
│║ SammetÆs Avantasia, Tolkki has written a concept ║ │
│║ record where different vocalists perform ║ │
│║ characters to tell the story. Their debut The ║ │
│║ Land of New Hope was released just a year ago to ║ │
│║ critical reviews. With such a fast follow up can ║ │
│║ it live up to the success of the first release? ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The story takes place in 2020 when the four ║ │
│║ elements fire, wind, earth and water are ║ │
│║ personified and sent down to mankind as angels ║ │
│║ to determine if the human raceÆs actions are ║ │
│║ appalling enough to cause the beginning of ║ │
│║ judgment day. It is a convoluted story that ║ │
│║ jumps back and forth through time. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Tolkki was able to reunite the legendary ║ │
│║ Dreamspace lineup of Stratovarius as drummer ║ │
│║ Tuomo Lassila and keyboard player Antti Ikonen ║ │
│║ are enlisted to perform. Their presence is felt ║ │
│║ throughout the record, as both are top-notch ║ │
│║ musicians. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ As usual, an all-star cast of vocalists have ║ │
│║ been assembled by Tolkki to execute the vocals. ║ │
│║ They include Floor Jansen (Nightwish), Simone ║ │
│║ Simons (Epica), Fabio Lione (Rhapsody of Fire), ║ │
│║ David DeFeis (Virgin Steele), Zachary Stevens ║ │
│║ (ex-Savatage) and Elize Ryd (Amaranthe). ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Not quite the stellar lineup that was featured ║ │
│║ on their debut, but still an impressive cast as ║ │
│║ all vocalists have an incredible range. One of ║ │
│║ the strengths of the record is throughout each ║ │
│║ track the vocalists seamlessly transition ║ │
│║ between each other and do an excellent job of ║ │
│║ creating a synergy with their performances. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The recordÆs first traditional track ôJerusalem ║ │
│║ is Fallingö is filled with gorgeous layers of ║ │
│║ orchestration, Iron Maiden inspired melodies and ║ │
│║ an inspiring vocal performance from Lione. ItÆs ║ │
│║ an epic song that has some amazing lead guitar ║ │
│║ playing from Tolkki and is one of the heavier ║ │
│║ tracks. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The driving tempo and catchy chorus of ôRise of ║ │
│║ the 4th Reichö veers closer to TolkkiÆs power ║ │
│║ metal past. DeFeis shows some range and adds an ║ │
│║ aggressive tone to his voice for nice effect. ║ │
│║ The guitar lead is frenetic and shows why Tolkki ║ │
│║ is one of the best. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The first single ôDesign of the Centuryö ║ │
│║ utilizes a choir to great effect and Jansen ║ │
│║ showcases perfectly why she is the new Nightwish ║ │
│║ singer. ItÆs a diverse track that is mellower ║ │
│║ during the verses before exploding for an ║ │
│║ appealing chorus. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The recordÆs first half is far superior to its ║ │
│║ second. Angels of the Apocalypse is stacked up ║ │
│║ front and the album loses steam half way and ║ │
│║ never recovers. The songwriting doesnÆt have as ║ │
│║ much depth as their debut and the songs arenÆt ║ │
│║ as memorable. It takes a few listens before the ║ │
│║ songs sink in and even then they arenÆt overly ║ │
│║ memorable. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Tolkki is immensely talented and his ability as ║ │
│║ a songwriter is impressive. Even though this ║ │
│║ doesnÆt quite live up to the first record, I ║ │
│║ hope Tolkki sticks with his Avalon vision, as ║ │
│║ this is the best he has composed in years. His ║ │
│║ playing is as good as ever and he plays with a ║ │
│║ ton of confidence. Even though there are areas ║ │
│║ of inconsistency, Tolkki has once again ║ │
│║ delivered a solid record. ║ │
