│║ Description : ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ This is Seasons of the WolfÆs most recent album ║ │
│║ at this point in time, and unfortunately it is ║ │
│║ almost seven years old now. I guess thereÆs ║ │
│║ something to be said for quality over quantity, ║ │
│║ because Once in a Blue Moon is easily the best ║ │
│║ thing the band ever did up to this point. This ║ │
│║ is a deep, resonating work of heavy metal art ║ │
│║ that transcends its genre and pretty much ║ │
│║ becomes the best thing this genre has produced ║ │
│║ post-2000 this side of Down Among the Deadmen. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Really, heavy metal, as I have said, is about ║ │
│║ tradition û it is about hearkening back to the ║ │
│║ sounds of the days of yore and recreating them ║ │
│║ in such a way to make people fall in love with ║ │
│║ the genre all over again. It is about making ║ │
│║ people forget about whatever shit modern trends ║ │
│║ are around in music right now and letting them ║ │
│║ remember the good old days. True metal is ║ │
│║ timeless, and even when the material is as old ║ │
│║ school as Once in a Blue Moon, there are still ║ │
│║ ways to experiment and make it sound fresh again ║ │
│║ û that is the mark of a great band as opposed to ║ │
│║ simple a pretty good one. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Seasons of the Wolf on here add in a huge amount ║ │
│║ of atmospherics. They really work with this ║ │
│║ whole autumnal, Halloween-ish theme and make it ║ │
│║ a big thing in their sound, drawing on ║ │
│║ influences as varied as DonÆt Break the Oath, ║ │
│║ Number of the Beast and Volume One while also ║ │
│║ keeping their own sound at the forefront. Just ║ │
│║ listening to this will transport you to windy, ║ │
│║ grey-skied autumnal roads with colored leaves ║ │
│║ red and orange blowing around your feet and the ║ │
│║ hint of winter just an inch away, teasing you ║ │
│║ like a seductress. The addition of two very well ║ │
│║ done ballads in the moody ôNikhedoniaö and the ║ │
│║ bluesy romp ôIn the Shadowsö really make all the ║ │
│║ difference when contrasted with the harder, ║ │
│║ heavier stomps û the variety makes this a real ║ │
│║ gem, adding a level of dynamic the band did not ║ │
│║ have in the past. Both of the aforementioned ║ │
│║ ballads are really just masterclass examples of ║ │
│║ songwriting, with subtle hooks and delicate ║ │
│║ vocal lines that build into powerful musical ║ │
│║ statements. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The heavier songs are simply immaculate too, ║ │
│║ probably some of the best the band ever did. On ║ │
│║ the careening ôWings of Doomö with its ║ │
│║ propulsive riff and the maniacal fury of ║ │
│║ ôSnaggletooth,ö as well as more atmospheric ║ │
│║ songs like the single-material ôGhost Womanö and ║ │
│║ the killer epic ôEdge of Time,ö the band sounds ║ │
│║ on-point and completely focused to levels they ║ │
│║ never had before. It really makes all the ║ │
│║ difference when you listen to this one as ║ │
│║ compared to their earlier albums. While those ║ │
│║ albums are very good in their own right, this is ║ │
│║ the one where the band comes out of the shadows ║ │
│║ of their influences and makes a great work of ║ │
│║ art that references the basic ideas and concepts ║ │
│║ of their idolsÆ songwriting, rather than just ║ │
│║ borrowing various tropes and overt musical cues ║ │
│║ û it is the difference between great heavy metal ║ │
│║ and great art. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ This whole thing just has so much more ║ │
│║ atmosphere, too û the band knows where to put ║ │
│║ every lick and every note to have the maximum ║ │
│║ effect. Everything on this album feels bigger ║ │
│║ and larger than life as compared to the bandÆs ║ │
│║ previous works. Every vocal line shakes your ║ │
│║ bones, every guitar riff washes over you like a ║ │
│║ wave, every drum hit is a sonic earthquake on ║ │
│║ the bandÆs own personal Richter scale. They ║ │
│║ evoke dreary, gloomily lit graveyards on some ║ │
│║ songs, war-torn battlefields and cosmic alien ║ │
│║ worlds on others. It is an explosive and vivid ║ │
│║ experience with lots of different textures and ║ │
│║ contours. While the music professes no higher ║ │
│║ viewpoint, no singular message, it does excel at ║ │
│║ telling stories and at transporting the listener ║ │
│║ to strange and exotic worlds. It uses the heavy ║ │
│║ metal template to its full advantage, creating ║ │
│║ new soundscapes and atmospheres most bands ║ │
│║ arenÆt creative enough to come up with. Seasons ║ │
│║ of the Wolf do some soundtrack work for movies ║ │
│║ and whatnot on the side, which you can tell by ║ │
│║ the loopy space adventure ôAlien Landscapes,ö an ║ │
│║ instrumental that somewhat recalls those of ║ │
│║ Satriani back in the day û the band utilizes ║ │
│║ synthesizers, guitars and ambiance to dizzying ║ │
│║ levels of excellence. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ I just donÆt have anything bad to say about this ║ │
│║ album. ItÆs about as objectively perfect as a ║ │
│║ metal album gets in this genre. The vitriolic ║ │
│║ energy and the expansive, imaginative musical ║ │
│║ soundscapes make this the best of both worlds û ║ │
│║ of catharsis and of introspection. ItÆs perfect ║ │
│║ for a long walk or an intense work-out session, ║ │
│║ or simply listening to it sitting alone in the ║ │
│║ dark. Once in a Blue Moon is a heavy metal album ║ │
│║ for the elite û lesser denizens need not apply. ║ │
