│║ Nocturnal Revelation represents a great triumph ║ │
│║ and a great shame all in one û it is a great ║ │
│║ triumph that Seasons of the Wolf put together ║ │
│║ something this flat out amazing, this utter ║ │
│║ modern classic. But itÆs a great shame that it ║ │
│║ remains largely unknown. The band was coming off ║ │
│║ the already-superlative Lost in Hell with this, ║ │
│║ and really on here they just made their sound ║ │
│║ even more eclectic and yet, simultaneously, also ║ │
│║ hearkened back even more to the classic bands ║ │
│║ that made this wonderful act possible. Overall ║ │
│║ this is the best of both worlds. LetÆs dig into ║ │
│║ Nocturnal Revelation and see what makes it tick. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ This whole album is just a big game of ôpick the ║ │
│║ influences.ö Your reward each time is awesome ║ │
│║ riffs, sinister vocals and out-of-this-world ║ │
│║ theatrics. The first couple of songs are very ║ │
│║ much in the old American Metal Church/Savatage ║ │
│║ mode, with chunky riffs, speed-metal tempos and ║ │
│║ shout-along choruses. The title track conjures ║ │
│║ up Mercyful Fate quite diabolically. Elsewhere ║ │
│║ as on ôSkullsö and instrumental ôDark and Lonely ║ │
│║ Depthsö you get some early DiÆAnno-era Maiden ║ │
│║ references with the boisterously blues-metal ║ │
│║ guitar attacks, and on ôNR3ö you get a callback ║ │
│║ to ôPlanet Caravanö û if it was played by one of ║ │
│║ the characters from HitchhikerÆs Guide to the ║ │
│║ Galaxy. ôStarstruck,ö true to its name, is like ║ │
│║ a demented Dio tune, ôMagnetic Starö is ║ │
│║ Sabbathine by way of Scanner and closer ║ │
│║ ôTransmissionö is pure Germanic steel by way of ║ │
│║ ôFast as a Shark.ö ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ So, with all of these various influences, it may ║ │
│║ sound like this is some kind of mess, or simply ║ │
│║ derivative beyond belief. But the band pulls ║ │
│║ everything together with gusto. The secret to ║ │
│║ good traditional metal isnÆt coming up with ║ │
│║ riffs or styles no one has ever heard before û ║ │
│║ it wouldnÆt be traditional metal in that case. ║ │
│║ This style of music is very much based on ║ │
│║ hearkening back to its origins û it is meat- ║ │
│║ and-potatoes good old heavy metal to the bone, ║ │
│║ and the whole appeal is crafting new and ║ │
│║ wonderful songs from a very established ideology ║ │
│║ and sound. This is loud music, it is proud and ║ │
│║ it is ready to kick your ass. If this were less ║ │
│║ well put together, it would simply be ║ │
│║ derivative; but as it is supremely well-written ║ │
│║ and performed, it becomes a clarion call to the ║ │
│║ days of yore. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The band is just on fire here. ItÆs the hardest, ║ │
│║ heaviest thing they ever did. Though the trippy, ║ │
│║ space-adventure feel of Lost in Hell is gone, it ║ │
│║ is replaced with a riff sensibility of the Gods. ║ │
│║ These are simply god-tier riffs, from the speedy ║ │
│║ ôDead Zoneö to the absolute riff-monster of ║ │
│║ ôQuilex,ö which has to be one of the three or ║ │
│║ four best songs the band ever wrote. This is ║ │
│║ just a great tune with Skully penning a riff ║ │
│║ worthy of Sabbath in their prime, groovy and ║ │
│║ hook-laden, plus aggressive, wailing vocals from ║ │
│║ Wes. ItÆs just pure metal bliss. ôSkullsö kills, ║ │
│║ with its sort of fluid structure going from a ║ │
│║ doomy crawl to a more upbeat sound much like ║ │
│║ Maiden as a masquerade party. ôMagnetic Starö ║ │
│║ might be the catchiest song the band has ever ║ │
│║ penned with its kinetic, landfill-sized rhythms ║ │
│║ and syncopated vocal lines. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The title track really is fucking good too, with ║ │
│║ fairly crushing riffs and a lot of dark, opaque ║ │
│║ melodies as the song twists and contorts like ║ │
│║ Regan from The Exorcist. Wes on vocals shrieks ║ │
│║ like a demon, and the song, as mentioned ║ │
│║ previously, does a great job at conjuring ║ │
│║ Mercyful Fate û except itÆs not just that they ║ │
│║ used a certain riff style. Here they sort of ║ │
│║ took the entire ethos of Mercyful FateÆs ║ │
│║ songwriting style and just did their own thing ║ │
│║ with it. ItÆs less of an influence and more ║ │
│║ homage, taking the Mercyful Fate style and ║ │
│║ turning it into a Seasons of the Wolf song. ║ │
│║ Killer. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ While not every song is amazing, theyÆre all at ║ │
│║ least good. Overall this is one of the better ║ │
│║ SOTW albums, with its dark sci-fi atmosphere, ║ │
│║ amazing riff sensibility and just the sheer ║ │
│║ amount of variety on display within the bandÆs ║ │
│║ chosen style. It really becomes quite a fun trip ║ │
│║ down the sheer heavy metal insanity of these ║ │
│║ menÆs minds. Seasons of the Wolf live and ║ │
│║ breathe metal like itÆs a religion. They are one ║ │
│║ of the most unequivocally metal bands around and ║ │
│║ I for one am proud to be a recent fan. Go check ║ │
