▓█ ░ RIP NOTES ░ █▓
▓█ ░ ░ █▓
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ Nukers/Friends, ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ We are providing the proof for the Miss Right DVD ░ ██
██ ░ because in its case the missing proof files were an ░ ██
██ ░ oversight. We have no expectation that any of our recent ░ ██
██ ░ proof.missing nukes will be overturned. We'd just like ░ ██
██ ░ to take this opportunity, however, to make it known we ░ ██
██ ░ are not fans of the proof rules and a cursory review of ░ ██
██ ░ well known groups missing as SD x264 signatories is ░ ██
██ ░ evidence that we weren't the only ones with this opinion. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ For this DVD we've provided a VOB cut as allowed by the ░ ██
██ ░ the rule 14.7b. This DVD retailed well before the rules ░ ██
██ ░ were signed and released. Here is the rule for reference: ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ --------------------------------------------------------- ░ ██
██ ░ 14.7) As a transitional measure, VOB source proof instead ░ ██
██ ░ of picture proof will be allowed for tiles that ░ ██
██ ░ match ALL of the following conditions: ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ a) Come from a DVD source. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ b) Retail date of the DVD is before the date this ░ ██
██ ░ document is pred. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ c) ... ░ ██
██ ░ --------------------------------------------------------- ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ With that cleared up we'd like to explain why we have ░ ██
██ ░ not provided proof for our recent analog sources (LD/VHS), ░ ██
██ ░ and have no plans to do so in the future. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ To start, if you examine the rules, as we did, you will ░ ██
██ ░ notice that rule 15.4 lists Laserdisc along with other ░ ██
██ ░ sources that are exempt from the proof rules. Again the ░ ██
██ ░ rule itself for reference: ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ --------------------------------------------------------- ░ ██
██ ░ 15.4) The use of sources like CAM, TS, TC, Workprint, ░ ██
██ ░ SCREENER, Laserdisc, etc. MUST be tagged with the ░ ██
██ ░ the source in the dirname and must adhere to ALL ░ ██
██ ░ the rules of this document, except for the proof ░ ██
██ ░ rules. Such releases are not considered retail ░ ██
██ ░ however, so retail DVD or BD rips pred after are ░ ██
██ ░ not to be considered dupes. ░ ██
██ ░ --------------------------------------------------------- ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ Reduced down to its most basic form the take away is: ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ (1) "Sources like... Laserdisc... must adhere to ALL the ░ ██
██ ░ rules... except for the proof rules". ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ (2) "DVD or BD rips pred after are... not dupes". ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ For the first point (1) the basic rule is still rooted ░ ██
██ ░ in the old XviD rules, which is only significant in that ░ ██
██ ░ by listing these more exotic tags, namely sources that ░ ██
██ ░ may not resemble DVD, for which the rules were geared ░ ██
██ ░ towards, the sources were at least still acknowledged and ░ ██
██ ░ therefore allowed. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ For a moment lets ignore the proof exemption angle of (1) ░ ██
██ ░ and look at point (2). This point is new to the SD x264 ░ ██
██ ░ and may not have been necessary, considering it appears to ░ ██
██ ░ have created more confusion when its pretty obvious given ░ ██
██ ░ the list of alternative sources that DVD/BRs would always ░ ██
██ ░ be allowed after. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ What starts to cause contradictions and confusion here ░ ██
██ ░ is that the SD x264 rules tries to justify the fact that ░ ██
██ ░ DVD/BR can always come after only BECAUSE they are retail ░ ██
██ ░ sources, and these other tags are not. Now obviously ░ ██
██ ░ Laserdisc meets the definition of having been a retail ░ ██
██ ░ product. So case closed right? Not really. This ░ ██
██ ░ contradiction creates a couple problems, either LDs ░ ██
██ ░ require proof and shouldn't be exempt because the list ░ ██
██ ░ is mostly made up of non-retail source types or if you ░ ██
██ ░ put it in the "retail camp" it could conceivably (although ░ ██
██ ░ unlikely) be argued that if an LD beat a DVD/BR to being ░ ██
██ ░ pred, then those sources would indeed be dupes if pred ░ ██
██ ░ later. Which sounds absurd of course. Hopefully its ░ ██
██ ░ becoming clear that this rule's makeover for SD x264 ░ ██
██ ░ was not helpful and has complicated a long standing ░ ██
██ ░ but simple rule. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ Now that we've established the latest evolution of this ░ ██
██ ░ rule that attempts to pigeon hole the list into serving as ░ ██
██ ░ examples of non-retail rips lets examine the choice in the ░ ██
██ ░ SD x264 rules to also mention that this group of sources ░ ██
██ ░ is exempt from requiring photo proof. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ After all, why ARE these sources left off? Why do we not ░ ██
██ ░ not need proof of a Workprint but somehow think we ░ ██
██ ░ actually need proof of a Laserdisc? ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ The answer should be pretty obvious, any type of photo ░ ██
██ ░ proof of a Workprint or a Telecine might be incriminating ░ ██
██ ░ and is therefor too high of a security risk to be an ░ ██
██ ░ acceptable practice. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ Yea that's right, you folks in the retail groups, the ░ ██
██ ░ rules consider you so untrustworthy that they apparently ░ ██
██ ░ are more interested in keeping you in line than keeping ░ ██
██ ░ you safe. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ Now lets examine why security is in fact the #1 reason ░ ██
██ ░ little ol' FLAiR is against providing proof for analog ░ ██
██ ░ sources, and why we have no plans to include proof in any ░ ██
██ ░ future analog releases. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ Consider that in the case of our analog sources, which ░ ██
██ ░ have been around for 20+ years and have moved from house ░ ██
██ ░ to house, yard sale to yard sale and sometimes auction ░ ██
██ ░ to auction, (all the while picking up identifying marks ░ ██
██ ░ like scratches, scuffs, dings, etc) essentially have ░ ██
██ ░ their own fingerprints that can serve as identifiers for ░ ██
██ ░ comparison. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ Now consider that the markets for finding these sources ░ ██
██ ░ are relatively limited and that pictures of these exact ░ ██
██ ░ objects are frequently online and could easily be traced ░ ██
██ ░ back to a photo of the same object provided as proof in ░ ██
██ ░ in a release like ours. Kind of an obvious and unacceptable ░ ██
██ ░ security issue wouldn't you say? Sure we can blur things ░ ██
██ ░ and try to keep ourselves safe but for what gain to ░ ██
██ ░ the scene? Our credibility on our sources has never been ░ ██
██ ░ in question. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ Do we sound paranoid? Sure. Do we think anyone is really ░ ██
██ ░ all that interested in us? Certainly not. Is it worth ░ ██
██ ░ the risk when your average 4chan kid could pull this ░ ██
██ ░ level of snooping off? Absolutely not. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ We know you think you're safe stripping EXIF data from ░ ██
██ ░ the photos most of you are likely taking from your phones, ░ ██
██ ░ and we're pretty sure those who never really spoke out ░ ██
██ ░ on these rules must believe there is otherwise a lack of ░ ██
██ ░ any clues in a basic photo of a DVD case or disc and a ░ ██
██ ░ printed or *gasp* hand written group tag. But if thats ░ ██
██ ░ how you think you're just not using your imagination all ░ ██
██ ░ that well. All these recent Snowden revelations should ░ ██
██ ░ remind us that the sophistication of modern day intell- ░ ██
██ ░ gathering techniques are no longer simply rumours or ░ ██
██ ░ speculation and if there's one thing in the scene that ░ ██
██ ░ should trump quality concerns its security concerns. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ We understand how many groups in the scene have proven ░ ██
██ ░ they can't be trusted, but we are simply not one of them. ░ ██
██ ░ Not only are we probably the most forthcoming about any ░ ██
██ ░ source peculiarities, the really funny thing is, the reason ░ ██
██ ░ some might find us to be sporatically active is at least ░ ██
██ ░ partially due to our own far more demanding rules and ░ ██
██ ░ standards. Rules we've defined for our process and output. ░ ██
██ ░ Rules we're forever debating internally, trying to decide ░ ██
██ ░ whether new ones should be made or whether old ones should ░ ██
██ ░ be tweaked or removed. We expect rules to provide a benefit ░ ██
██ ░ and any percieved benefit to proof rules, as we do not ░ ██
██ ░ actually see one for analog sources, is certainly ░ ██
██ ░ overshadowed by the security concerns it raises. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ So as people who value the importance of rules, let us ░ ██
██ ░ say we know pretty well when they make sense to follow ░ ██
██ ░ and when they don't. Furthermore, we believe in the case ░ ██
██ ░ of analog sources that image based proof rules are a ░ ██
██ ░ strong detriment to our ability to do what we love, with ░ ██
██ ░ no real gain. So regardless of future tweaks to 15.4, ░ ██
██ ░ perhaps even seeing the removal of the word Laserdisc from ░ ██
██ ░ the list, we'd like it to be clear that we will still ░ ██
██ ░ not provide photos of our analog sources as a form of proof, ░ ██
██ ░ period. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ Now, like we have in the past and for those of you who ░ ██
██ ░ may remember, we may still provide our own honset scans of ░ ██
██ ░ the source covers as a means to share the wonderful ░ ██
██ ░ artwork commonly found on them, and heck to satisfy nukers ░ ██
██ ░ we might even put them in a /proof directory, but we'd only ░ ██
██ ░ ever do this if and when we determine that scanning them ░ ██
██ ░ involves no threat to our security. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ If you've ever read our general rip notes, you know we ░ ██
██ ░ can practically wax on forever about these kinds of things, ░ ██
██ ░ so to close out this communique, we'd like to end with ░ ██
██ ░ these final thoughts: ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ We love rules, we love quality, and overall we're ░ ██
██ ░ delighted with the format upgrade and the new SD x264 ░ ██
██ ░ rules. We just consider our general security to be more ░ ██
██ ░ important than providing proof for no clear benefit. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ If you want to nuke us for our future analog sources ░ ██
██ ░ go ahead. We expect our old and loyal sites wont be ░ ██
██ ░ batting an eye over it. To the nukers, thanks for at least ░ ██
██ ░ noticing us, we've always just assumed you guys ignored us ░ ██
██ ░ like that awkward kid in the school cafeteria that would ░ ██
██ ░ sit down next to you. And to any of our "newer" sites who ░ ██
██ ░ aren't aware that we got our rule book from groups like ░ ██
██ ░ SiCK, get in contact with us, we don't support stupid ░ ██
██ ░ rules, we'd prefer our sites don't either. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ Cheers. -FLAiR ░ ██

▓█ ░ WHO WE ARE ░ █▓
▓█ ░ ░ █▓
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ Since 2003, FLAiR has been dedicated to preserving ░ ██
██ ░ the neglected titles of an entertainment era long gone. ░ ██
██ ░ A time of classic kids flicks, painstaking hand-drawn ░ ██
██ ░ animation and countless cheesy low-budget horrors. A ░ ██
██ ░ time when pop had a King, and rock had a Queen. A time ░ ██
██ ░ when special FX wizards ruled, and CGI was just one of ░ ██
██ ░ their many tools. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ Driven by nostalgia and memories of better days, we ░ ██
██ ░ seek to relive those times, and share those memories. ░ ██
██ ░ While our belief is that the 80s represent the very ░ ██
██ ░ pinnacle of pop culture, we will not limit ourselves ░ ██
██ ░ to one decade, or any single genre. We will not ignore ░ ██
██ ░ the movies considered insignificant or even embarrassing ░ ██
██ ░ by the studios. We will not disregard a timepiece just ░ ██
██ ░ because it is dated. ░ ██
██ ░ ░ ██
██ ░ Whereas most groups rely solely on digital sources, ░ ██
██ ░ there are still thousands of rare and out of print ░ ██
██ ░ titles, many of which have no planned digital release. ░ ██
██ ░ We've made it our mission to dig these out, clean them ░ ██
██ ░ up using the best hardware and techniques available to ░ ██
██ ░ us, and share them with the world. Be it VHS, Laserdisc ░ ██
██ ░ or more exotic formats, we're here to bring you the best ░ ██
██ ░ (and worst!) of decades past. So sit back and enjoy as ░ ██
██ ░ we uncover and pay tribute to an age of cinema we will ░ ██
██ ░ never get back. ░ ██
