A New York native, Jeff Redd began singing with the short-lived
group The Sophisticated Gents at the age of 17 in the mid 80s.
Redd signed a deal with Uptown Records/MCA Records after Andre
Harrell saw him perform as a solo artist. The label conjunction
released his debut album "A Quiet Storm" in 1990 which saw limited
commercial success but became a bar raiser for the new jack swing
movement. Shortly after, Redd played a large part in getting then-
unknown singer Mary J. Blige her start in the music industry. Redd
handed Blige's demo tape to executives at Uptown, who eventually
signed her, and Blige ended up touring with Redd as a backup
singer. In 1993, Redd recorded a second album, "Down Low".
However, before the album could see release, MCA shuttered their
entire black music department. As a result, only 1000 copies ever
circulated, and the album is very hard to find. Jeff Redd then
went on from there to work as an A&R executive at MCA Records.
Redd's debut "A Quiet Storm" included the uptempo new jack swing
tracks "I Found Lovin" and "Come And Get Your Lovin", and the ballad
"Love High". Two of the album's singles found their way onto the
Billboard R&B chart: "What Goes Around Comes Around" reached #53,
and "Love High" reached #16. The album featured major producers such
as DeVante Swing from Jodeci, Timmy Allen, Ced Gee, as well as The
Untouchables' Dave Jam Hall and DJ Eddie F. Besides a guest
appearance by rapper Chubb Rock, several of the album's tracks also
features backing vocals by producer Swing's fellow Jodeci members
K-Ci and JoJo.
