The band lineup changed again with the
inclusion of violinist/oboeist Amanda
Brown before Tallulah's recording sessions
began, and in keeping with the group's
near-perfect streak of releases Tallulah
itself is a delight. This said, there are
one or two slips over its course -- "The
House That Jack Kerouac Built" is burdened
down by its title from the start, while
some tracks are gently relaxed without
being very involving. There's also the
slightly curious decision by Morrison to
create drum machine lines for some songs
instead of playing them herself, which
ends up unfortunately dating the record to
the late-'80s period of its creation. It's
the about the only flaw on the ravishing
opening song, though. "Right Here," with
one of McLennan's most affecting vocals
and a shimmering, memorable chorus, also
has a completely wonderful full band
performance, Brown's violin adding an
inspired extra element to the familiar
Go-Betweens approach. It's also only one
of two songs produced by Craig Leon on the
album, apparently both being done as
potential singles (the other, "Cut It
Out," sounds like an attempt at a Top 40
yuppie dance groove but is saved by a
great chorus). The remainder do have a
less immediately radio-friendly feel,
though one can hear a lot of extra touches
in the arrangements, especially on
keyboards. Both Forster and McLennan are
again in fine voice, their individual
singing styles long since their own
particular trademarks working in tandem,
while Brown's own backing vocals slot in
very nicely on many songs. Full on winners
this time around -- "I Just Get Caught
Out," another in the line of Go-Betweens
"upbeat but nervous" classics, the
reflective personal study "the Clarke
Sisters," and "Bye Bye Pride," another
Forster success with a killer chorus.
