│║ Description : ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ In the run-up to the release, Marty Friedman's ║ │
│║ eleventh full-length solo release, Inferno, was ║ │
│║ said to be the album that fans of Megadeth and ║ │
│║ Cacophony always wanted me to make, suggesting a ║ │
│║ heavy album. And having listened to it quite a ║ │
│║ few times by now, I can say that's what it is. ║ │
│║ It's a very heavy Marty Friedman album, second ║ │
│║ to none in his career. But more importantly, is ║ │
│║ it still any good? Well, guessing by the score I ║ │
│║ gave it you may have already guessed that it is, ║ │
│║ and I will be soon be arguing why. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The band behind Friedman has stepped up since ║ │
│║ the Jukeboxes and Bad DNA. The other musicians ║ │
│║ are more noticeable and especially the drummer ║ │
│║ plays on overdrive. This is due to a whole range ║ │
│║ of guest musicians featuring on this album as ║ │
│║ well as the general pace of the album, which is ║ │
│║ quite a bit higher than what we're used to from ║ │
│║ Friedman. The guitars themselves sound a bit ║ │
│║ different than on the previous albums. The ║ │
│║ guitars seem to sound a bit clearer than they ║ │
│║ did previously. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Now, on to the most important part of the album: ║ │
│║ the songs themselves. The stuff that's found ║ │
│║ here is much more metal-oriented than the ║ │
│║ Jukeboxes and Bad DNA, and the entire album ║ │
│║ feels like Loudspeaker cranked up to 11, and ║ │
│║ then some! Especially the first half of the ║ │
│║ album is very fast-paced. From the raging and ║ │
│║ soaring solos on the title track to the flamenco ║ │
│║ guitar on Wicked Panacea and the ║ │
│║ saxophone/guitar trade-off solos on Meat Hook, ║ │
│║ it twists and turns on itself constantly. The ║ │
│║ second half, although it is still very heavy ║ │
│║ (I'm looking at you, Sociopaths!), feels less ║ │
│║ frantic mainly due to the inclusion of the ║ │
│║ wonderful song Undertow, which provides a bit of ║ │
│║ a breather. It's comparable to Picture or Devil ║ │
│║ Take Tomorrow, only with a bit more synth in the ║ │
│║ background, as heard on Introduction or even ║ │
│║ Ashita E No Sanka. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ As already mentioned, there are a lot of guest ║ │
│║ musicians on this album, contributing to the ║ │
│║ crazy feel of the album. There's a lot mixing of ║ │
│║ many different styles of music on Inferno. It ║ │
│║ makes listening to it much more interesting, ║ │
│║ because the songs are so very different from ║ │
│║ each other, and the combinations of styles are ║ │
│║ pretty unusual. That crazy and generally odd ║ │
│║ sound may be off-putting at first, but improves ║ │
│║ a lot after some additional plays. ║ │
│║ Unfortunately, this strength does become a ║ │
│║ weakness in one case in particular. I feel that ║ │
│║ the saxophone and guitar don't complement each ║ │
│║ other that well in the first thirty seconds of ║ │
│║ Meat Hook. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ I've read some criticism over the years that ║ │
│║ Friedman 'sold out' to Japanese pop. If that ║ │
│║ would even be the case, then this album would ║ │
│║ surely prove the critics wrong. This is not to ║ │
│║ say there is no criticism for this album, ║ │
│║ though. I feel Lycanthrope isn't as strong as it ║ │
│║ could have been. The craziness goes a bit over ║ │
│║ the top at times. Put a little differently, it ║ │
│║ sometimes misses the incredible melodies that ║ │
│║ made the Tokyo Jukeboxes and Bad DNA wonderful ║ │
│║ albums. Listening to this album, there's only a ║ │
│║ few 'hummable' melodies, a homemade test for ║ │
│║ melody, if you will. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ All in all, Friedman let completely loose on ║ │
│║ this album and that has worked out very well. ║ │
│║ This is an incredibly heavy, and most of all, ║ │
│║ metal album. He hasn't lost any of his ║ │
│║ incredible chops or songwriting ability. This ║ │
│║ album proves he can play almost djenty riffs and ║ │
│║ think of something to go with it (Inferno), ║ │
│║ crazy neoclassical arpeggio's like on Speed ║ │
│║ Metal Symphony (Horrors), but also beautiful ║ │
│║ melodies that we've come to expect of the man ║ │
│║ (Undertow). The songs are heavier and crazier ║ │
│║ than ever before on a Friedman solo album. ║ │
│║ Definitely worth getting! ║ │
