More acts today are exploring the
merger of dance music, R'n'B vocals and
indie-friendly songwriting; The Acid
are one of the better ones.
A collaboration between California's
Steve Nalepa, England's Adam Freeland
and Aussie-born producer/vocalist Ry X,
the trio lend a real intimacy to
widescreen compositions that bubble and
flow without hitting predictable peaks.
That said, they're fond of teasing a
peripheral roughness while exploring a
softer side: opener Animal threatens
its delicateness with burly throbs of
bass, and other tracks hint at release
without quite succumbing.
Fans of James Blake, Darkside and
recent Radiohead will be at home, while
Basic Instinct strongly evokes Bon
Iver. Still, for all the up-to-the-
minute earmarks, The Acid establish
their own distinct world, where the
suave and timid oddly intersect, where
desires are whispered (Creep and Ghost)
or merely mumbled (Fame).
More a close-quarters headphones record
than an extroverted dancefloor summons,
Liminal devotes itself to the fine art
of simmering. And it's not all
electronic: guitar proves a key part of
the slow-burn on tracks like Ra.
