│ │
│ Original soundtracks from 1962 John Frankenheimer political thriller │
│ with Frank Sinatra, 2004 Jonathan Demme remake with Denzel Washington. │
│ David Amram approaches story with resonating score for orchestra, │
│ divides material into variety of ensemble colors. Highlight is haunting │
│ theme for solo trumpet against brass choir, heard later in different │
│ ensemble for strings. Neat forward-moving idea: trumpet melody moves │
│ about as solo line, French horn plays independent countermelody, brass │
│ chords shift about constantly underneath. Adding further interest: same │
│ harmonies are piquant, complex then suddenly cadence with rock solid │
│ major chords. Striking! Amram adds much contrast by bringing in unique │
│ jazz material, often retaining coherency through similar harmonic ideas. │
│ Still further contrast comes from sizzling, staccato action riffs: │
│ pizzicato strings, sliding strings, brass stingers, woodwind cries, you │
│ name it. Amram exploits winds from highest piccolo to lowest contrabass │
│ clarinet, shows off orchestrational skills. Amongst his bag of tricks │
│ are three piccolos squealing major chords, mildly dissonant harpsicord, │
│ prominent tuba, so forth. Some unique sounds! Only quibble: rich final │
│ statement of trumpet theme with definitive coda in strings is │
│ inexplicably missing, though heard in film and present on earlier │
│ Premier label CD. Otherwise, a flawlessly assembled suite drawn from │
│ original stereo elements. David Amram plays French horn, orchestrates, │
│ conducts. 2004 remake offers different approach. Rachel Portman designs │
│ small motifs, draws them together in tightening web of orchestral │
│ texture. Themes take back seat to suspenseful material, variety of │
│ linking devices. Snare drum brings military element into spotlight. By │
│ no means minimalist, however. Portman gives score shape, draws vivid │
│ picture using subtle ideas. Where Amram brings in variety of colors, │
│ exploits several instrumental combinations, Portman paints with more │
│ limited palette, mostly emphasizes lower sonorities. Horns, trombones │
│ stay in the staff or below, upper brass tacet completely. Three │
│ conductors receive credit: Theodore Sperling, Michael Kosarin, Lucas │
│ Richmond. Generous Varese Sarabande CD offers diverse approaches to same │
│ subject matter by two accomplished composers. Neat opportunity for │
│ listeners! │
│ │
│ Enjoy another GREAT release from SRN!!! │
