rob smith's credentials are one reason for the standard on
display. one half of the acclaimed duo smith and mighty, he's been
a name to reckon with on the club circuit for nearly two decades.
but a packed cv doesn't necessarily promise quality, and that's
exactly what up on the downs is.
in the smoky laid-back recesses of his sounds, smith finds a
groove that circles around lazy vocals; pushing things up tempo
but never breaking a sweat.
there are many reasons why smith is the answer to dj shadow, but
it is his british eclecticism that is the main one. like shadow,
smith has cast his net over the influences and rhythms that shaped
him and dragged them altogether into something moody and magical.
the track "early bird" is exclusively on this vinyl. also "twisted
city" was not to be found on the grand central 2 compilation.
