Notes:
Eureka! This is it. This is the disc, the shit, the
bomb. If you like 70's influenced rock, stoner rock,
or anything that might be categorized this way, you
will surely cream your shorts over Hangnail's second
disc Clouds in the Head. Granted, the band's name is
slightly lame, the album title seems somewhat
clumsy, and the lyrics aren't the most coherent, but
I promise you that when you hit the play button, any
doubts you may have had will be erased.
Whereas too many bands choose to be lazy with their
music, keeping it too mellow or too uninvolved, this
British quartet grabs your balls and twists like
there's no tomorrow. Nearly every song is good,
something that can't even be said Hangnail's the
mighty country mates, Orange Goblin. Somehow these
guys just know how to make high-energy music that
grooves, rocks and rolls perfectly.
The well placed solo on the title track, the
aggression present in "Third Time Around," and Mr.
Armstrong's Zeppelin-esque wailing, powerful vocals
throughout the disc are only a few examples of how
the band succeeds.
Tracks like "Slowhead," "Release" and "Into the
Ether" demonstrate the breadth of the band's sound
as well as their ambition. The first opens the disc
with steady, controlled groove, the second ups the
ante with an explosive riff, and the third shows how
Hangnail can soften things up and still rock hard.
Still more surprises lurk on Clouds in the Head, so
I won't ruin it. Please don't be foolish and ignore
this band because they are so fucking good!
