ªª▓ There is a state of consciousness somewhere between the dreaming and waking worlds where the ▓ªª
ªª▓ line between reality and hallucination is unclear. In dreams, we often trick ourselves into ▓ªª
ªª▓ thinking that we are awake. The logic that defies logic in our waking lives makes perfect ▓ªª
ªª▓ sense in dreams and we rarely think to question the otherwise senseless events we encounter ▓ªª
ªª▓ in circumstances fabricated by our unconscious mind. When we are awake, we are equally ▓ªª
ªª▓ certain of what is real. We are sure that we are not tricking ourselves as we engage with ▓ªª
ªª▓ our surroundings. Yet, in that moment before we fall asleep or before we awake, the doubt of ▓ªª
ªª▓ our existence is greatest. The things around us seem to falter and quake, as if we are ▓ªª
ªª▓ having a seizure, but it is the world that is seizing and shaking. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ In Austrian author Gustav MeyrinkÆs first novel, The Golem, published in 1915, he writes, ▓ªª
ªª▓ ôWhen men arise from their beds, they think they have shaken off sleep and they know not ▓ªª
ªª▓ that they have fallen victim to their senses and are in the grip of a much deeper sleep than ▓ªª
ªª▓ the one they have just left.ö This quotation is found printed in the liner of notes of ▓ªª
ªª▓ Benommenheit, a recent release from Post Scriptvm, a Russian dark ambient/industrial noise ▓ªª
ªª▓ project based out of New York. The words provide a clue to understanding the albumÆs tone, ▓ªª
ªª▓ as does the title, Benommenheit, which can be translated from German to mean dizziness, ▓ªª
ªª▓ numbness, or a stupor. This is Post ScriptvmÆs fifth full-length release and the third ▓ªª
ªª▓ released on GermanyÆs Tesco Organisation label. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ I have not read MeyrinkÆs novel, but I gather that the golem is a representation of the soul ▓ªª
ªª▓ of the Jewish ghetto. In traditional lore, the golem is a clay man who becomes inhabited by ▓ªª
ªª▓ this collective soul and awakens to protect the community from outside invasion. ▓ªª
ªª▓ Benommenheit seems to be an examination of this process of awakening and makes reference to ▓ªª
ªª▓ the golem legend in several ways. Most obviously, there are the images on the packaging of ▓ªª
ªª▓ what appear to be clay or plaster faces, resembling death masks. Another reference may be ▓ªª
ªª▓ found in the track titles, such as ôFaces like Masks.ö ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ The journey to awakening (or falling victim to the senses, as it may be) begins with the ▓ªª
ªª▓ first track entitled ôHorrorbirthö, in which vectors of auditory light pierce the dark mass ▓ªª
ªª▓ of unconsciousness causing it to convulse like a beast, as distant muffled cries emerge from ▓ªª
ªª▓ the void and this give-and-take of vector-mass pulsation gives way to a mechanical rumble as ▓ªª
ªª▓ if the impending reality were a manufactured product. In the second track, ôW.A.L.S.C.H.ö ▓ªª
ªª▓ (an acronym which is unclear to me), the vectors are accompanied by a bombardment of ▓ªª
ªª▓ crashing irregular pulses ù perhaps a heartbeat ù as clinical, undecipherable voices echo ▓ªª
ªª▓ across an expanse that is undefinable. In ôCornersö, the transition is abrupt with the cogs ▓ªª
ªª▓ and gears of a dream factory attempting to reorder the chaos and ghostly distorted vocals ▓ªª
ªª▓ breathing an incantation into our golem. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ On track four, ôFaces like Masksö, waves of moderately melodic static wash over whatever ▓ªª
ªª▓ being this is we imagine. More voices echo, which taper off as dull tones rise up out of the ▓ªª
ªª▓ core of this creature, like the long drawn-out ring of bells resonating through psychic ▓ªª
ªª▓ placenta. ôSick of Shadowsö is a lengthy retreat into the stagnation of silence, although ▓ªª
ªª▓ one might also hear the seeping sound of the body in question drawing in the life of the ▓ªª
ªª▓ tribe. In ôNature Morteö, stasis has been achieved. The crashes of external turbulence are ▓ªª
ªª▓ muffled, and from within, a flute-like near-melody manifests itself. More voices echo. None ▓ªª
ªª▓ of the words can be understood as they reverberate and jerk around, like light reflecting ▓ªª
ªª▓ off of a disturbed liquid surface. The inner becomes greater than the outer expanding as if ▓ªª
ªª▓ it cannot be contained. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ ôEerie Cargoö begins as the calm before a storm. Notes from a piano slowly play while ▓ªª
ªª▓ sprites and demons flit about and we know that we will soon be ôawakeö with the rising ▓ªª
ªª▓ gravitas of reality solidifying around us. Is there fear? Is there pain? We think there must ▓ªª
ªª▓ be beyond the wall of consciousness, and so this tension forms in low, sustaining moans as ▓ªª
ªª▓ ethereal substance dissolves, and in a final act of resistance, in ôClinging on like Grim ▓ªª
ªª▓ Deathö, a spectral cry is raised against the mechanization of consciousness only to be ▓ªª
ªª▓ tortured and battered back into submission, until finally the album ends with ôMal de ▓ªª
ªª▓ DΘbarquementö (translated as bad landing). All signs of life are present. Vital functions ▓ªª
ªª▓ are in proper order. Synapses are connecting properly. We have only to open our eyes and be ▓ªª
ªª▓ alive, but we kept them closed for a full seven minutes. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ It is difficult to say how one might respond to Benommenheit apart from its conceptual ▓ªª
ªª▓ framework. Upon my first few listens, I was not terribly impressed, but as I delved into the ▓ªª
ªª▓ meaning of the work and attempted to visualize what was happening, the process of awakening ▓ªª
ªª▓ as it were, the record began to take on new life. I imagine the entire fifty-four minutes of ▓ªª
ªª▓ the release taking place in only a few moments, drawn out and dissected as a work of art by ▓ªª
ªª▓ Post Scriptvm. In this process, we find our individual life force to be just a fragment, a ▓ªª
ªª▓ mere splinter of a greater whole from which we do not wish to separate. We are all golems, ▓ªª
ªª▓ clay bodies filled with a spirit that is larger than we can contain. Our senses are finite ▓ªª
ªª▓ cages through which we experience only a tiny portion of our true life. So waking up to our ▓ªª
ªª▓ supposedly ôreal worldö is a painful process. It is the separation of birth that we undergo ▓ªª
ªª▓ on a daily basis. One day, we will return to the womb and find our true soul in all its ▓ªª
ªª▓ fullness. ▓ªª
