'Music is my life,' says Paul Flynn. It's a saturday night in
Glasgow's sub club and he's explaining how a kid from Cranhill came
to be making some of the coolest music on the planet right now.
Though he's released just a handful of records since his debut in
1994 with the 'East End Tracks' EP, this 22 year-old producer counts
some impressive supporters in his corner. Derrick May and Carl Craig
play his tunes. Lil' Louis has enlisted him for remix duties. Yet
almost no one knows his name and that's the way he prefers it.
That's why the records he makes for filter are credited to DJ Q. It's
not about being a star. It's about anonymity, about letting the music
speak for itself. because that's what counts. Paul Flynn isn't 'old
skool' or 'nu skool' - he's true school...
Mateo & Matos have proven time and again they've got musical spirits
like few others in the house scene.
In the summer of '85 (believe it or not) John Mateo was spinning
whole sets over the airwaves of his CB radio. It was through this
self-produced show that Eddie Matos first made contact with John
Mateo. They became friends quickly and partners soon after. They have
been inspired by listening to Larry Levan, Tony Humphries, Shep
Pettibone and Little Louie Vega.
From '86 through '89, Mateo & Matos performed at a staggering number
of club festivals and old school block parties in the tri-state area
of New York. In late 89 they started producing and have released
numerous E.P.Æs and singles from then until now on many record labels
throughout the world. They've since torn up dance floors spinning in
over thirty countries. You can find their unique New York soulful
sound in dozens of original productions and remixes on record labels
such as King Street, Defected, Nervous, Large and Glasgow
Underground.
If spirituality and soul in house music is what you seek, Mateo &
