Raunchy, satirical, political, and profane, Swamp Dogg is one of the
great cult figures of 20th century American music. The creation of
Jerry Williams, Jr., an R&B producer and songwriter of the 60s,
Swamp Dogg fit no tidy category. In sheer musical terms, Swamp Dogg
is pure Southern soul, anchored on tight grooves and accentuated by
horns, but the Dogg is as much about message as music. Williams
incorporated all the mind-bending psychedelic ideas of 60s
counterculture - drugs, sex, radical politics, social politics -
into the framework of deep soul, establishing his blueprint on
1970's "Total Destruction To Your Mind", then spinning out
variations over the next several decades, never having hits
(although 'Total Destruction To Your Mind' apparently went gold at
some point), but earning a rabid cult following while raking in
royalties through his behind-the-scenes work, which included penning
the country standard "She's All I Got" (popularized by Johnny
Paycheck)..
Jerry Williams, Jr. established his Swamp Dogg persona in all its
sweaty, dirty, funky glory on his 1970 debut "Total Destruction To
Your Mind", leaving him nothing more to do on its 1971 successor,
"Rat On", but to sand off the rough edges. And that's precisely what
he does here, keeping the same blend of southern soul sound and
psychedelic sensibility, railing against the US in a fashion not
dissimilar to George Clinton ('God Bless America For What', which is
a slow-burning piss-take on 'God Bless America'), letting the drugs
fall to the wayside, writing more than his fair share of cheating
songs and sex tunes, then throwing in a couple of covers (the Bee
Gees' 'Got To Get A Message To You', Mickey Newbury's 'She Even Woke
Me Up To Say Goodbye') that wind up sounding quite odd when
surrounded by this unfettered strangeness.
Whatever slight feints toward rock and funk Swamp Dogg attempted on
"Total Destruction To Your Mind" have been eliminated, so "Rat On"
is all hard southern soul, but no matter how pure and gritty the
album sounds, Williams' attitude is just too weird to have this fit
in neatly with the southern soul circuit. Plus, in 1971, this sound
was feeling outdated - Stax had Isaac Hayes' "Shaft", The Staple
Singers were singing "Respect Yourself", songs that were funkier and
fresher than what Swamp Dogg served up here. But that is the appeal
of the Dogg overall and "Rat On" in particular: he didn't belong to
his time so he was best appreciated out of time, with a cult
developing around listeners who dug beneath the soulful punk of the
surface to find the weirdness that lies inside.
