Release Notes: ░██▓
██▒
One of the last of the bebop generation still standing, Roy ██░
Haynes is a quiet figure in the history of jazz. While not ██
one of jazz's obvious stars, he is every bit as important a ██
stylist as Max Roach or Art Blakey, and his CV is something ██
to behold. "Hip Ensemble", one of the few LPs he issued as a ██
leader in the early 70s, shows an instrumental pioneer ██
working with an exciting young band. ██
██
The Boston-born drummer's first job was in the band of Louis ██
Armstrong alumnus Luis Russell. He went on to play with ██
Lester Young and was thrown into the bebop spotlight when he ██
joined Charlie Parker's group in 1949. With Parker, and ██
afterwards backing Sarah Vaughan, he established his own ██
style. On leaving Vaughan he joined the Thelonious Monk ██
Quartet, which at the time included John Coltrane, who would ██
often call on Haynes when his regular drummer was unable to ██
make a gig. Haynes began to regularly turn up on sessions, ██
playing on seminal recordings by, amongst others ,Eric ██
Dolphy and Jackie McLean. He also made a series of albums ██
under his own name for Prestige's New Jazz label and ██
Impulse. ██
██
While he continued to play, by the time he signed to ██
Mainstream he hadn't released a record in the USA for seven ██
years. He was very proud of his new group, which featured ██
young musicians he had seen on his travels. The horn line-up ██
boasted talented rising stars in saxophonist George Adams ██
and trumpeter Marvin Peterson. The music is semi-acoustic in ██
that it uses electric bass and electric piano to create ██
exciting post-bop. There are touches of the avant-garde and ██
funk, all held together by Haynes' thrilling drum work. ██
Enjoy! ██
