██▓ With their second full-length album, Chicago production duo ▓██
██▓ Supreme Cuts attempt to make a big leap. Their 2012 debut ▓██
██▓ Whispers in the Dark was a strikingly trendy and sometimes ▓██
██▓ engrossing stew of bass beats that seemed more eager to ▓██
██▓ confound than galvanize. There were few rhythms to groove to ▓██
██▓ and no words to sing along with, but on Divine Ecstasy that ▓██
██▓ changes. Alongside a number of vocal collaborators, Supreme ▓██
██▓ Cuts shoot for the anthemic but come up measurably short. ▓██
██▓ ▓██
██▓ ▓██
██▓ To be clear, these arenÆt exactly pop or R&B songs: instead, ▓██
██▓ they sound like remixed versions of nonexistent singles that ▓██
██▓ were at one point accessible. Accessibility, of course, is both ▓██
██▓ subjective and far from lifeÆs only path, but in trying to mold ▓██
██▓ controlled chaos into actual verses and choruses, Divine ▓██
██▓ Ecstasy gets lost in translation. This is no clearer than on ▓██
██▓ the lead single ôDown", which features members of close Supreme ▓██
██▓ Cuts collaborators JODY. The track clearly aims for the ▓██
██▓ skipping headrush of classic booty bass R&B songs, but ▓██
██▓ landmarks like ôMy Booö or INOJÆs ôLove You Downö work because ▓██
██▓ of the simple but effective interplay between a sweet, clear ▓██
██▓ vocal and a propulsive, heart-racing rhythm. ôDown", on the ▓██
██▓ other hand, is a disastrous mush of too-fast drums, misty ▓██
██▓ keyboards and muddled bass. It sounds like a demo and probably ▓██
██▓ shouldÆve stayed as such. ▓██
██▓ Even the songs here that show flashes of congealing eventually ▓██
██▓ end up falling apart into a watery mess. ôCocktailsö has a ▓██
██▓ strong vocal performance from the Portland R&B singer Shy Girls ▓██
██▓ that hits a certain ethereal sweet spot where the ▓██
██▓ unintelligibility of the lyrics only highlights the grace of ▓██
██▓ the melodies. But the production is overly busy to the point of ▓██
██▓ tunelessnessùit constantly rattles the song out of what could ▓██
██▓ have been an aching and tense ballad. The same can be said for ▓██
██▓ ôEnvision", which features Channy Leaneagh of Poliτa. The vocal ▓██
██▓ here is not nearly as good, but nonetheless itÆs drowned out by ▓██
██▓ a clattering beat. The song, or what could have been a song, ▓██
██▓ completely disintegrates. ▓██
██▓ Polyrhythms for the sake of polyrhythms is the defining ▓██
██▓ characteristic of Divine Ecstasy. But what Supreme Cuts seem to ▓██
██▓ miss is that the tricky percussion of contemporary R&B legends ▓██
██▓ like Timbaland or Rodney Jerkins always had a place. ▓██
██▓ TimbalandÆs drum programming was mind-bending not just because ▓██
██▓ it was almost impossible to understand how it came from a human ▓██
██▓ brain, but because it was always functional. Almost every ▓██
██▓ single song on Divine Ecstasy could have benefited greatly from ▓██
██▓ producers Mike Perry and Austin Kjeultes dialing way back. ▓██
██▓ ôBrown Flowersö is case in point: in allowing a stunning vocal ▓██
██▓ from French singer Mahaut Mondino to soak up the spotlight, ▓██
██▓ Supreme Cuts end up with easily the albumÆs best song. ▓██

██▓ In ethos and tone, Divine Ecstasy reminds me often of no world, ▓██
██▓ the neo-soul revivalist album from the duo Inc. If there was ▓██
██▓ one major criticism of that record is that there wasnÆt enough ▓██
██▓ personalityùthat Inc. was reverent to a fault without having ▓██
██▓ the skill level of, say, Maxwell. But I liked that inc. let no ▓██
██▓ world speak for itself. They made no extraordinary effort to ▓██
██▓ win you over. The songs were more important than being called ▓██
██▓ "impressive." On Divine Ecstasy, Supreme Cuts bash you over the ▓██
██▓ head with every single tool in their box. If you last more than ▓██
██▓ one round, consider yourself incredibly resilient. ▓██
