:: Hamfer≡ is a band that all music fans, at least those with ::
:: taste in extreme music, should know by now. During the five ::
:: year existence of this doom metal band hailing from the ::
:: Faroe Islands they've won Sement, a battle of the bands of ::
:: sorts, released a well received EP, toured Europe with ::
:: Moonsorrow and T²r and won Wacken Metal Battle and declined ::
:: a record contract with Nuclear Blast. Their first full- ::
:: length release, titled Evst, has seen the light of day. ::
:: ::
:: The album, which includes six songs, is as gloomy as one ::
:: would expect from Hamfer≡. The songs go on on slow, but ::
:: steady and melodic, pace. The songs are beautifully and well ::
:: written. Everything sounds good and it's obvious that the ::
:: members have used their time to write, perfect and record ::
:: these songs well. J≤n delivers great vocals where he ::
:: switches seemingly effortlessly between melancholic and ::
:: emotional clean singing and deep, rumbling growls. And ::
:: talking about vocals, Eiv°r Pßlsd≤ttir gives great backing ::
:: vocals on Sinnisloysi, the 5th song on the album, which adds ::
:: a whole lot to the feeling of the song. ::
:: ::
:: As before, the music is heavy and full of sorrow, but it ::
:: sounds somehow more matured. Hamfer≡'s brew of doom and ::
:: gloom has progressed without losing any of the key elements ::
:: that make the music and the band as good as it is. The songs ::
:: seem somehow more complex and there's more depth to them ::
:: than before. Sometimes guitar solos can be a bit too much ::
:: and they seem to be there just to be there and don't do ::
:: anything for the song, but that is not the case here as they ::
:: compliment the songs like they should do. ::
:: ::
:: Evst is nothing short of an amazing album which the members ::
:: of Hamfer≡, and everyone that participated in creating it, ::
:: can be proud of. The artwork made by J≤n Sonni Jensen fits ::
:: well to the atmosphere that the band created for this album. ::
:: Fans of slow and heavy music really have no excuse not to ::
:: give this band and this album their time, as this is one of ::
:: the better doom releases this year. ::
