│║ The Scintilla Project is a band formed by the ║ │
│║ legendary Saxon frontman Biff Byford, as ║ │
│║ soundtrack of sorts to the upcoming sci-fi film ║ │
│║ Scintilla. ItÆs a literal super-group of sorts, ║ │
│║ which also features Lionel Hicks of Balance Of ║ │
│║ Power and the legendary Hell guitarist, Andy ║ │
│║ Sneap. The band plays a sort of spacey ║ │
│║ progressive metal thatÆs full of symphonic ║ │
│║ elements and sounds a bit different than what ║ │
│║ weÆd expect from either of the three musicians ║ │
│║ native bands. But thatÆs not to say that it ║ │
│║ isnÆt a good album, because it does manage to ║ │
│║ pack a punch in ByfordÆs voluminous howls, ║ │
│║ HicksÆ potent drumming and especially SneapÆs ║ │
│║ masterful guitar playing. He really puts the ║ │
│║ meat into the solo sections here, as youÆll hear ║ │
│║ displayed in ôPermanenceö, ôThe Damned And The ║ │
│║ Divineö, single cut ôBeware The Childrenö and ║ │
│║ others. Keep in mind that several of the songs ║ │
│║ on this release are actually quite long, ║ │
│║ especially in the beginning so itÆs definitely ║ │
│║ not a record that rolls in and rolls out easily. ║ │
│║ As one might expect a few ballads are also to be ║ │
│║ found here, namely in ôSome Nightmareö and ôLife ║ │
│║ In Vainö which both come off as fragile as glass ║ │
│║ and as memorable as they would have been on any ║ │
│║ Saxon record. In a way, The Hybrid does sound ║ │
│║ very much like a Saxon record and thatÆs ║ │
│║ certainly not a bad thing, because some definite ║ │
│║ time and effort was put into this record and ║ │
│║ that can be felt immediately. Perhaps itÆs not ║ │
│║ something I quite expected from either of these ║ │
│║ guys, but I can say that it is most certainly an ║ │
│║ experience that will grow upon the listener and ║ │
│║ might even be better than the film itself. That ║ │
│║ is still up to debate, as I havenÆt seen it yet. ║ │
│║ But if Biff Byford, Andy Sneap and Lionel Hicks ║ │
│║ believed in the work enough to write this spacey ║ │
│║ metal soundtrack to it, then I guess IÆm going ║ │
│║ to have to give it a watch. In a way, The ║ │
│║ Scintilla Project almost sounds like Biff Byford ║ │
│║ fronting Ayreon, which is in no way a bad thing, ║ │
│║ though if they could have found a way to rattle ║ │
│║ Arjen Luccassen from his keys and actually had ║ │
│║ him be a part of this; then it could have been ║ │
│║ literally amazing. IÆm not sure as to whether or ║ │
│║ not this project is a mere one-off or something ║ │
│║ that will see future records to come, but if ║ │
│║ youÆre a fan of Saxon, Hell, Balance Of Power ║ │
│║ and progressive power metal, then I am sure that ║ │
│║ you will find something to like here. Besides, ║ │
│║ theyÆve capped it all off with a cover of a ║ │
│║ Saxon classic, ôNo Rest For The Wickedö which is ║ │
│║ certainly all the more reason to give it a spin. ║ │
│║ WouldnÆt it be great if more films had metal ║ │
│║ soundtracks? ║ │
