14 years and still groovin..
Categorizing the work of beatmaker Paul White has always been difficult.
Predictably, "Where You Gonna Go?" - the first single to be taken from his
Shaker Notes LP - is similarly hard to define. It's wonderfully haunting and
exotic, with Arabic-influenced instrumentation and marimba melodies riding a
slack-tuned drum groove, watery electronic noises and drifting vocals. It's
a thing of rare beauty, even if it does defy convention. There's more
'hard-to-pigeonhole' fare to be found on "Peace It Together", a Middle
Eastern-influenced chunk of enveloping electronic jazz. The package is
completed by a superb remix of the title track from Detroit native AndrΘs,
whose shuffling, soul-flecked deep house beats and warm Rhodes chords
provide the perfect compliment to White's weary scat vocals.
