         Not many bands today can write a song that is nine
         minutes in length and avoid going stale. The number
         of bands that can do this grows every day, but itÆs
         still a fairly limited amount. And Auto Pilot
         easily find themselves in this select group, if
         only for one shining, dragged-out moment, the
         opening track to this EP, ôUteraeon.ö Of course,
         they later find themselves in the even rarer class
         of bands who can write a 14 minute song that
         captivates a listener, but thatÆs just rubbing it
         in. At no point was I unimpressed by their strong
         musicianship or songcraft. And that only continued
         as the disc progressed. Sure, itÆs full of things
         you can find with just about any semi-talented
         band, but Auto Pilot is something special, despite
         never grazing far from familiar territory.
         Basically, itÆs not a risky album, but the band
         doesnÆt exactly play it safe either. ItÆs
         listenable, enjoyable, intriguing, sparse,
         gorgeous, and melodic. This description probably
         sounds like those shitty bands you hear on the
         radio now, like Shinedown and the like. But trust
         me, nothing could be less true.

         As I said, this band has that inexplicable
         something that sets them apart from their peers.
         The problem with inexplicable, however, is that it
         cannot easily be explained. In fact, it canÆt be
         explained. If you donÆt believe me, use a
         dictionary. And thatÆs why bands like this are a
         hard sell. Looking at them from a distance, there
         really is nothing spectacular about them. Then
         again, if that were true, theyÆd have signed a
         major record deal and would be topping the charts
         in weeks. The fact that this has not happened only
         furthers my statement that thereÆs something
         special about them.

         So if you like your melodic rock, but hate the
         radio, or are a fan of the inexplicable something
         that transforms a band from merely decent to
         fantastic, Auto Pilot is right up your alley. And
         itÆs leaving from Gate G-13.
