│║ Description : ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ At an early age, Marcel Jacob discovered that he ║ │
│║ possessed the talent for playing guitar, bass, ║ │
│║ and writing songs. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Jacob started his musical career playing ║ │
│║ together with Yngwie Malmsteen and in a band ║ │
│║ called ôForceö (which would later become ║ │
│║ ôEuropeö). with Force, he co-wrote the songs ║ │
│║ öThe King Will Returnö and öScream Of Angerö ║ │
│║ with Joey Tempest, the latter which would remain ║ │
│║ a fan favorite amongst Europe fans that the band ║ │
│║ continue to perform live even today. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Jacob recorded on the album öMarching Outö with ║ │
│║ Yngwie and remained for 2 world tours from 1984 ║ │
│║ -86. Difficulties with management forced him to ║ │
│║ quit and head back to Sweden. In Autumn of æ86, ║ │
│║ guitarist John Norum departed from the band ║ │
│║ ôEuropeö and was looking for members to complete ║ │
│║ his solo band. Jacob joined and started writing ║ │
│║ songs for NorumÆs first release, ôTotal ║ │
│║ Controlö. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ On October 29th, 1987 JohnÆs solo album was ║ │
│║ released and positioned high on the charts with ║ │
│║ the first single ö Let Me Love Youö ║ │
│║ (Norum/Jacob), which climbed to number 2 and ║ │
│║ reached Gold status. A tour followed, and when ║ │
│║ finished Marcel began writing and recording new ║ │
│║ songs and demos just as he had done on JohnÆs ║ │
│║ first album, thinking that these new songs would ║ │
│║ end up on JohnÆs second solo album. Marcel felt ║ │
│║ the new material was perfect for John, but John ║ │
│║ rejected the songs and in pursuit of other goals ║ │
│║ and obligations, leaving Marcel with a bunch of ║ │
│║ good songs but no one to perform them with. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Marcel then met Christer Wedin, (actually at a ║ │
│║ Yngwie Malmsteen show in Sweden), where Marcel ║ │
│║ explained the situation and they decided to meet ║ │
│║ again to get Christer the demo tapes. Christer, ║ │
│║ who was working for the record label Electra at ║ │
│║ that time, convinced the label that this was ║ │
│║ worth looking into. But with no singer or a ║ │
│║ band, there was a lot to do. Together they ║ │
│║ started discussing different singers that could ║ │
│║ work for these songs. On the demos G÷ran Edman ║ │
│║ was singing but not available due to other ║ │
│║ commitments with Yngwie Malmsteen. One singer ║ │
│║ that had always been in MarcelÆs mind was Jeff ║ │
│║ Scott Soto. Both Jeff and Marcel played together ║ │
│║ on Yngwie MalmsteenÆs "Marching Out" album in ║ │
│║ 1985 and did a substantial tour in support of ║ │
│║ the album. So, Marcel contacted Jeff and got the ║ │
│║ material over to him. After listening to the ║ │
│║ songs Jeff agreed to join the band. At the time, ║ │
│║ the working title for the band was Guitars On ║ │
│║ Fire, but later it was changed to Talisman. ║ │
│║ Finally the label had something to work onà ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ In February 1989 recordings for the first album ║ │
│║ took place in Stockholm. Unfortunately, Electra ║ │
│║ went into some problems just when the mixing was ║ │
│║ finished and the album was put on hold and the ║ │
│║ release was delayed. Meanwhile, Jeff's US-based ║ │
│║ project Eyes got signed and Marcel left for Los ║ │
│║ Angeles to help out writing songs and record ║ │
│║ what would be Eyes first release, while waiting ║ │
│║ to see what would happen with the Talisman ║ │
│║ album.s ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ After some politics and struggle, Hans Desmond ║ │
│║ (Warner Chappell) and Christer Wedin together ║ │
│║ found a new record label interested in MarcelÆs ║ │
│║ "Talisman" album and it finally hit the streets ║ │
│║ in February 1990. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ TalismanÆs popularity took everyone by surprise ║ │
│║ and the first single "I'll Be Waiting" reached ║ │
│║ number 2 on Sweden's singles chart and 33,000 ║ │
│║ copies of the album were sold instantly in ║ │
│║ Sweden. With chart and radio success the band ║ │
│║ then needed to meet their fans. Marcel and Jeff ║ │
│║ contacted Jason Bieler on guitar (Saigon Kick), ║ │
│║ Jakob "Jake Samuel" Samuelsson on drums (today ║ │
│║ with The Poodles) and Thomas Wikstr÷m on ║ │
│║ keyboards and backing vocals to get the band out ║ │
│║ on the road. In the summer 1990 Talisman was one ║ │
│║ of the top drawing acts in Sweden. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Due to the success in Sweden, a major record ║ │
│║ company (in this case Warner) signed the band, ║ │
│║ but before recordings for the second album ║ │
│║ started, a personnel change at Warner resulted ║ │
│║ in Talisman leaving the label. This left Marcel ║ │
│║ writing songs and spending most of his coming ║ │
│║ years looking for a new label while Jeff went ║ │
│║ back to the US fulfilling his commitments with ║ │
│║ Eyes. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Christer Wedin, who had worked at TalismanÆs ║ │
│║ first label as A & R and with press and ║ │
│║ promotion, became the Swedish General Manager ║ │
│║ for Dutch/Canadian label Dino Music (later ║ │
│║ Empire Records). Naturally, Christer was ║ │
│║ interested in releasing a second Talisman album ║ │
│║ when he now had the chance to make it happen. ║ │
│║ Since also Eyes were no longer together, Jeff ║ │
│║ was available and agreed to re-join the band. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ In the interim, Jake Samuel had also left ║ │
│║ Talisman, so Marcel programmed all the drums for ║ │
│║ the new record. The new album "Genesis" was ║ │
│║ recorded in three weeks in December 1992. Jeff ║ │
│║ joined the recordings and a very talented 19- ║ │
│║ year-old guitar player named Fredrik ┼kesson ║ │
│║ (today with Opeth) was found and joined the band ║ │
│║ to record the guitar parts. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ In conjunction with the release of TalismanÆs ║ │
│║ second album "Genesis" in early 1993, Dino Music ║ │
│║ acquired the rights of the first album and re- ║ │
│║ released "Talisman" adding six live bonus tracks ║ │
│║ recorded in Sweden during the 1990 summer tour. ║ │
│║ When "Genesis" was released, the single ║ │
│║ "Mysterious" received airplay, and Talisman ║ │
│║ again gained success in Sweden. At this time, ║ │
│║ the Japanese audience had discovered Talisman ║ │
│║ and several record companies were now interested ║ │
│║ in releasing the albums. One label won the ║ │
│║ bidding when also confirming a Japanese tour for ║ │
│║ the band. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ While the band was planning a tour in Japan, new ║ │
│║ drummer Jamie Borger from the recently broken-up ║ │
│║ Treat was recruited and joined the band. ║ │
│║ Talisman became a ægroupÆ for the first time and ║ │
│║ was now ready to tour Japan and the live album ║ │
│║ "Five Out of Five û Live in Japan" was recorded ║ │
│║ and later released. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Back from Japan and at the end of the European ║ │
│║ tour in October, Fredrik, Jamie and Marcel spent ║ │
│║ the following two months in a rehearsal studio, ║ │
│║ writing, playing, improvising, make ║ │
│║ arrangements, learning new stuff and collecting ║ │
│║ tons of new material for what would become the ║ │
│║ new studio album ôHumanimalö. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ In January 1994, Jeff joined the guys and the ║ │
│║ band recorded and mixed the new album. The guys, ║ │
│║ being so pleased with the recordings (22 tracks ║ │
│║ recorded and mixed), wanted to make it a double ║ │
│║ album at first, but then decided against it. A ║ │
│║ second version, ôHumanimal pt 2ö, was later ║ │
│║ released with the outtakes from the first one. ║ │
│║ The "Humanimal" albums were greeted with great ║ │
│║ enthusiasm thanks to a successful combination of ║ │
│║ metal, funk and pop influences and are still a ║ │
│║ global fan favourite. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ In 1995, Marcel and Jeff worked together in LA ║ │
│║ to write the songs for the next album ôLifeö. ║ │
│║ The original mixing took place in the same ║ │
│║ studio where "Genesis" was recorded, once again ║ │
│║ with the help of Mats Lindfors, but something ║ │
│║ didnÆt sound right so General Manager Christer ║ │
│║ Wedin decided that the album should be remixed. ║ │
│║ Christer and Mats remixed the entire album in ║ │
│║ Cosmos studios in Stockholm for the European ║ │
│║ version. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ After these recording sessions and with no tour ║ │
│║ planned, the guys took a 3 year long break from ║ │
│║ Talisman. Jeff went on to do other things in the ║ │
│║ US, although he and Marcel had taken some time ║ │
│║ to record the Human Clay albums. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ During this time, Talisman only performed a ║ │
│║ couple of shows when they were asked to play and ║ │
│║ open for old friend Yngwie Malmsteen in ║ │
│║ Stockholm. For those shows, the band enlisted ║ │
│║ Pontus Norgren on guitar (today in Hammerfall) ║ │
│║ because Fredrik ┼kesson had already left the ║ │
│║ band during this long break to pursue a more ║ │
│║ metal oriented direction. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ In 1998, the guys were asked by Christer Wedin ║ │
│║ (Empire Records) to record a new Talisman album ║ │
│║ and so Marcel travelled to LA to write songs ║ │
│║ with Jeff. Jamie and Pontus joined the guys a ║ │
│║ few days later to rehearse and record, and the ║ │
│║ new album "Truth" saw the light. The guys ║ │
│║ received a lot of recording and mixing help from ║ │
│║ John Ellis (Prism Sound Studios, Boston). The ║ │
│║ album included a range of covers: ôDarling ║ │
│║ Nikkiö by Prince, ôLet Me Entertain Youö by ║ │
│║ Queen and ôFrozenö by Madonna, but once again ║ │
│║ the band was unable to tour together due to ║ │
│║ other commitments. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Three years later after yet another long break, ║ │
│║ Talisman was asked to perform at Sweden Rock ║ │
│║ Festival and together with Christer Wedin, ║ │
│║ Marcel and Jeff started the plans to record a ║ │
│║ new live album. Talisman performed in a tent, ║ │
│║ fully packed with a deafening crowd and the show ║ │
│║ was a success. The live album was released in ║ │
│║ autumn 2001 and charting at number 18 the first ║ │
│║ week! ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Later that year Jeff, Marcel and Pontus joined ║ │
│║ forces with drummer Thomas Broman (Great King ║ │
│║ Rat) to form another project and released the ║ │
│║ self-titled album ôHumanimalö in 2002. Same year ║ │
│║ Marcel and Jeff had a meeting with Christer ║ │
│║ Wedin who explained to the guys that now, when ║ │
│║ relieved from their contracts; they were ║ │
│║ basically free to go into business without him, ║ │
│║ as Christer now had decided to pursuit his ║ │
│║ career in the movie industry. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ At the same time though, an Italian recording ║ │
│║ studio willing to let Talisman use the studio ║ │
│║ for free had just contacted Christer. Marcel ║ │
│║ reopened this contact and the Italian label ║ │
│║ opened their arms for another Talisman album. ║ │
│║ The recording took place at near Turin and the ║ │
│║ album "Cats and Dogs" was released in May 2003 ║ │
│║ and this time Marcel and Jamie had pushed and ║ │
│║ persuaded Fredrik ┼kesson to come back in the ║ │
│║ saddle again. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ In 2005, Talisman released the double DVD ║ │
│║ package "WorldÆs Best Kept Secret". The set ║ │
│║ included two complete shows from the "Cats & ║ │
│║ Dogs" tour in 2003 (Sweden Rock Festival and ║ │
│║ Club Mondo in Stockholm), backstage and live ║ │
│║ footage, promotional videos, an instructional ║ │
│║ video from Marcel Jacob and more. A double live ║ │
│║ album "Five Men Live", including the gigs at ║ │
│║ Sweden Rock Festival and Club Mondo, was also ║ │
│║ released at the same time. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ For about 9 months starting in late 2005, Jeff, ║ │
│║ Marcel, Jamie and Fredrik worked on a new ║ │
│║ Talisman album later to be named "7". The ║ │
│║ working title was "BAR" which stood for ║ │
│║ "Bitter-Angry-Resentful", basically a joke ║ │
│║ referring to the guysÆ outlook on certain life ║ │
│║ events. The guys eventually opted for the more ║ │
│║ straightforward title "7" as it was actually the ║ │
│║ bandÆs 7th studio album. The release was due on ║ │
│║ October 2006, with a Japanese release to follow. ║ │
│║ This album became the final Talismans album. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ In the summer of 2009, july 21st Marcel Jacob ║ │
│║ sadly ended his life due to personal health ║ │
│║ problems. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ After 11 years at Warner Bros, Christer decided ║ │
│║ to pursue new goals and ambitions and set up his ║ │
│║ own company û A Sun Hill Production AB. As ║ │
│║ Christer has almost been involved in all the ║ │
│║ albums Marcel released with Talisman, Sun Hill ║ │
│║ Production now is the home for Marcel Jacob and ║ │
│║ Talismans music. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ By keeping this website, we keep MarcelÆs legacy ║ │
│║ and spirit alive. Marcel Jacob was truly great ║ │
│║ musician and extraordinarily talented bass ║ │
│║ player, songwriter, son, brother, uncle and dear ║ │
│║ friend. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Sadly missed, but never forgotten. ║ │
