│║ On a Sunday afternoon in April, 1999, my wife ║ │
│║ and I were sitting in King Diamond's living room ║ │
│║ (yes you read right) as he was playing some CDs ║ │
│║ for us. First he played his latest Mercyful Fate ║ │
│║ album 9 two months prior to being released. Then ║ │
│║ he played the Deep Purple-Machine Head 25th ║ │
│║ Anniversary Edition as well as AC/DC frontman ║ │
│║ Brian Johnson's original band. Then he told us ║ │
│║ to listen to the next CD he put in the player. ║ │
│║ It was a some killer 70's style hard rock that ║ │
│║ reminded me of Deep Purple or Uriah Heep....then ║ │
│║ came the vocals. The unmistakeable vocals of ║ │
│║ King Himself. This was all original music, ║ │
│║ except for the Radar Love cover. I had no idea ║ │
│║ that what we were hearing was something that no ║ │
│║ one outside of King's CLOSE personal circle had ║ │
│║ ever heard. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ He began to explain that he had just had that ║ │
│║ material put on a CD-R and had not even heard ║ │
│║ the CD version of it until that day. He told us ║ │
│║ that it was his first REAL band called Black ║ │
│║ Rose and this was a rehearsal that happened to ║ │
│║ get caught on tape...to include between song ║ │
│║ chatting in Danish. We sat there in awe as to ║ │
│║ not only what we were hearing, but that we were ║ │
│║ privledged enough to be the first fans to hear ║ │
│║ it! He also explained that this is where the ║ │
│║ character King Diamond first came to light to ║ │
│║ include make-up, throwing pigs blood and pigs ║ │
│║ heads into the crowd as well as some other ║ │
│║ really over the top stage antics. We told him ║ │
│║ that he MUST release it. He told us that he was ║ │
│║ considering it but did not know if the fans ║ │
│║ would be interested in it. We told him that ║ │
│║ every true King Diamond fan must own this ║ │
│║ material. I found out later that year that King ║ │
│║ indeed was releasing the Black Rose album. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Now I come from the old school of hard ║ │
│║ rock/metal and bands like Deep Purple, Uriah ║ │
│║ Heep, UFO, etc was what I was raised on. The ║ │
│║ Black Rose music was of such high quality that I ║ │
│║ was surprised that they never got any deals to ║ │
│║ record. Some of the best classic hard rock I ║ │
│║ have ever heard. Had this been a professional ║ │
│║ recording, they would have gotten far. I love ║ │
│║ this album for not just the music, but the ║ │
│║ history that it represents. It also shows that ║ │
│║ King Diamond has been making incredible music ║ │
│║ for much longer than first suspected. Thsi album ║ │
│║ shows the roots of musical genius. ║ │
