| Musically rewardning and visually exhilarating, L┤Orchestre |
| de Contrebasses, the French ensemble of six contrabasses, |
| makes you put aside all the vague notions you may have |
| about the largest string instrument in the orchestra. |
| Yet their music does not linger on the bass line. The extensive |
| variety of sonorities ranges from low drones to the |
| high-pitched cries of a seagull, and even drumming on the |
| body - a fact that explains why the band is called an "orchestra" |
| rather than an ensemble. |
| They play their own original works, some jazzy, some with |
| folk or dance slants, pushing the instruments potential of the full. |
