│║ DARK AGE û my second contact. One would think, ║ │
│║ but so far I ôonlyö have one CD under this name, ║ │
│║ from the Chilean band. The Hamburg-based folks ║ │
│║ around singer/guitarist Eike Freese already are ║ │
│║ around for 1995 and with ôDark Ageö already have ║ │
│║ their fourth album (plus one EP) out. Still I ║ │
│║ had heard them for the first time last year in ║ │
│║ Wacken and I really liked them back then. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ When somebody would ask me, which band DARK AGE ║ │
│║ would be closest to musically, IÆd have to say ║ │
│║ SOILWORK, even though the Germans have some ║ │
│║ differences, but the combination between Death ║ │
│║ and Dark Metal with clear as well as growled ║ │
│║ vocals and keyboards shows some parallels to the ║ │
│║ Swedish shooting stars, but we donÆt want to ║ │
│║ hold that against this quintet right away again. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The opener ôFix The Focusô sets out pretty ║ │
│║ varied, we get different rhythms and tempos, ║ │
│║ Death Metal vocals, very good clean vox and also ║ │
│║ a bit of distortion, plus very well used ║ │
│║ keyboards, which give the whole thing an own ║ │
│║ touch, if you disregard the really not fitting ║ │
│║ electronic part towards its end, a dynamic, ║ │
│║ melodic, but still heavy opener that wets the ║ │
│║ appetite for more. They continue with the a bit ║ │
│║ snottier ôZeroö, with again a very catchy and ║ │
│║ cleanly sung chorus, but this does so not ║ │
│║ prepare for the following songà ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ That one bears the title of ôDare To Collapseô ║ │
│║ and is an absolute hit! Extremely varied, with ║ │
│║ varied vocals, great melodies, but also fat ║ │
│║ double bass and heavy guitars, very dynamic and ║ │
│║ just strong, also with a guest appearance of ║ │
│║ Johan Edlund of TIAMAT. Also ôNikitaö can fully ║ │
│║ convince, completely sung in Death, while ôMy ║ │
│║ Own Darknessö is a ballad, completely with clean ║ │
│║ vocals and acoustic guitars, which is a stark ║ │
│║ contrast to the rest of the album, very well ║ │
│║ done. And at the end DARK AGE present us with ║ │
│║ ôSuicide Solutionö, a really strong version of ║ │
│║ Ozzy Osbourne, with many Death vocals, very ║ │
│║ good! ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ So far so good, so is ôDark Ageô a brilliant ║ │
│║ album all the way through? Not completely, ║ │
│║ because a few of the songs cannot hold this ║ │
│║ standard, without being bad. A ôDare To ║ │
│║ Collapseö alone, though, already is almost worth ║ │
│║ it, also as the production by Eike Freese ║ │
│║ himself is very clear and powerful. The ║ │
│║ Hamburgians have created a modern album that at ║ │
│║ least in Germany so far does not have much ║ │
│║ competition to fear and should appeal to fans of ║ │
│║ various styles. ║ │
