hefner's second single for inertia an evening with hefner is a
natural progression from the sublime fiendish which featured on
the sounds like inertia album. it's a melodic, head-nodding
mini-symphony in three parts built around hefner's lush string
arrangements and unique shuffling beats. in part i hefner
whistles(!) the melody is to a jazzy, drum & bass influenced
rhythm that gives way to the rolling funkiness of part ii in which
the melody is developed further. part iii is more ambient and
tripped-out, featuring mesmerising wordless vocals amid washes of
strings and synths. actionslacks is a shade closer to what most
people think of as drum & bass. its slower than most but its the
choice of sounds and the structure of the tune that set it apart.
from the abstract introduction the beats and atmospherics collide
and merge into haunting breakbeat jazz with a hint of the
sound-track influence that inspired his first single car chase.
