Release Notes: ░██▓
██▒
hey all you bitches and hoes, ██░
██
okay, for those that don't know, first off the classic ██
"midnight theme" drums were sampled for "how i could just ██
kill a man," (hear it yet? they're a bit sped up) and manzel ██
went down into hip hop history from there. ██
██
so a couple years ago kenny dope (who i have a love/hate ██
relationship with, read on) copped the masters to the ██
venerable "midnight theme" and it's b-side "space funk." ██
these two cuts were ... how do i put it... CRAZY. putting ██
each on a separate 7", he remastered them, made the sound so ██
crisp and even put the goddamned drum acapellas on the b- ██
sides (check the igr rips if ya havent). these two releases ██
made me fall in love with manzel. ██
██
about a year later kenny dope again attempted to capture ██
lightning in a bottle. he released "it's over now" with, ██
again, remasterization and stuff, this time on a 12". and ██
since at the time i had a job and was eager to eat up ██
anything manzel, of course i grabbed it. but it was, as our ██
brothers from the other side of the atlantic say, shite. ██
this overproduced garbage and housed-up drums made my dusty ██
fingers cringe. i had learned a lesson that day, that kenny ██
dope was a house producer. and he ruined manzel for me. ██
██
anyway, that experience had washed away and i was off to ██
grab manzel's midnight theme lp when it dropped... on kenny ██
dope's dopebrother records a few days (weeks?) ago. the ██
results are mixed of the two above testimonials. some of it ██
sounds all gayed out and house-like, and some of it is just ██
tight funk (with a tinge of dance music). and apparently it ██
turns out that kenny dope wasn't who killed manzel for me, ██
because the bottom line is that manzel isnt THAT good of a ██
musician in the first place, relying on his tweaked keyboard ██
effects and easy-listening sensibilities. that said, there ██
are definitely some cuts to check out here. ██
██
the masters at work apparently don't know that disco killed ██
funk. but anyway... ██
██
for ya'll hip hoppers, check out: midnight theme, space funk ██
(and all their remixes), jump street (which, if is how the ██
rest of the album sounded originally, dopebrother should ██
have left untouched). ██
██
i like: vera cruz, sugar dreams as well. ██
