│║ Among all aficionados of melodic rock, Sweden is ║ │
│║ generally known as one of those countries that ║ │
│║ spawned a lot of excellent bands. The latest in ║ │
│║ the long row is this here Work Of Art, even ║ │
│║ though the band has already been founded in ║ │
│║ 1992. ║ │
│║ Robert SΣll (g) and Herman Furin (d) stumbled ║ │
│║ upon each other at school and soon found out ║ │
│║ that they liked each otherÆs way of writing ║ │
│║ songs. FurinÆs friend, Lars SΣfsund, joined the ║ │
│║ two on keys and backing vocals and together they ║ │
│║ recorded some demos. Finding a suitable singer ║ │
│║ seemed a lot more difficult that they had ║ │
│║ thought and when a couple of other projects came ║ │
│║ into the picture as well, it was unanimously ║ │
│║ decided to put the band on ice for a while. ║ │
│║ When SΣll and Furin picked up the æWork Of ArtÆ ║ │
│║ thread several years later, they once again ║ │
│║ asked SΣfsund to help out, but this time only as ║ │
│║ recording engineer. When SΣfsund heard the basic ║ │
│║ tracks for eight new songs, he was so ║ │
│║ enthusiastic that he expressed his desire to ║ │
│║ sing with the band again and the others were ║ │
│║ happy to add him to the line-up. ║ │
│║ At the beginning of last year the first official ║ │
│║ WOA demo was released, which led to the deal ║ │
│║ with Frontiers. Listening to the bandÆs debut ║ │
│║ album, cleverly titled ôArtworkö, I can only ║ │
│║ admit that the Italian label of Serafino ║ │
│║ Perugino has added yet another excellent band to ║ │
│║ their impressive roster. The songs are of a very ║ │
│║ high quality and the performances as well as the ║ │
│║ production are fingerlickinÆ good. To be honest, ║ │
│║ I canÆt understand why SΣll and Furin have been ║ │
│║ looking for a suitable vocalist, when they had ║ │
│║ such an incredible singer within handreach! ║ │
│║ SΣfsund is indeed an unbelievable talented ║ │
│║ vocalist, and as such it doesnÆt surprise me ║ │
│║ that he already won the semi-final of the ║ │
│║ Romanian Eurovision Contest! ║ │
│║ What I like about ôArtworkö is the diversity of ║ │
│║ the material. Among the 12 songs on offer, ║ │
│║ thereÆs something for everyone, ranging from ║ │
│║ ballads (like ôOne In A Lifetimeö) through ║ │
│║ radio-friendly songs (such as the Toto-ish ║ │
│║ ôMariaö and ôLost Without Your Loveö) to real ║ │
│║ up-tempo songs (like opener ôWhy Do I?ö, ôCover ║ │
│║ Meö and ôOne Hourö). Another pluspoint is the ║ │
│║ crystal-clear production. While a lot of todayÆs ║ │
│║ albums suffer from a mediocre sound, this is ║ │
│║ certainly not the case with this work of art of ║ │
│║ producer SΣfsund. ║ │
│║ Conclusion: together with KhymeraÆs ôThe ║ │
│║ Greatest Wonderö, Work Of ArtÆs ôArtworkö is ║ │
│║ another album an AOR lover canÆt do without. ║ │
│║ Great to see that Frontiers is still going ║ │
│║ strong in this difficult days for melodic rock! ║ │
