Prior to the recording of "When The Morning Comes", Marit
Larsen decided to take a big step out of your comfort zone.
She chose to park namely producer and collaborator through
three albums, reputable Kσre Vestrheim, and sat on the plane
to Nashville instead.
Not to detract Kσre Vestrheim brilliant productions, but a
change may be necessary to maintain the excitement and
creative momentum. That said, it is Marit Larsen: still
herself an equal. It's still her unmoved voice and easily
maneuverable melodies that sparkle in the center. So be it.
Her fellow musicians knew reportedly nothing about her as an
artist before they were hired for the recording, but obviously
though where they will lie in the sound stage to give her
space. It sounds airy and classical - not so orchestrated that
one is used to in her previous solo albums.
The opening track, "Please Do not Fall For Me"introduces
Larsen over a tight, almost industrial drum groove, a heaving
bass line and some sparse piano chords, before ironing clean
lift the bittersweet chorus of weather.
The hard drums follow her too through "Faith & Sience," where
she finds it too good to ruffling it with walls of guitar
without losing the hook vocal lines of sight. In "I'd Do It
All Again" she leans over a dump bass drum, while the sonorous
guitars coloring in pages. It sounds mysterious and inviting.
Marit has even produced the disc and she has obviously spent a
lot of time giving each song its own distinct expression both
EVENT and sonically. Which in turn help to make the album a
varied and exciting experience.
The single "I Don't want To Talk About It" is a typical Marit
Larsen-popperle about troubled love. Musically, it really
swings slightly - there is wind in your hair and r°rklokker in
the chorus.But it is always within, all the time she knows to
portion out the instruments in appropriate doses.
Westcoast elements are still there, people too - she is
roaming at all a little more here and there this time. Maybe
it has something with all different outfits she dresses tunes
up? There is nevertheless a solid red thread throughout the
album, and it is Larsen's natural way of expressing himself.
"When The Morning Comes" cements Larsen's status as one of the
country's finest songwriters.
