our favourite producer/remixer, artist extraordinairre, towa tei
is ready to hit the world with his 3rd solo project "last century
modern". first released in japan in 1999, worldwide release is
scheduled for may 23rd, 2000.
again, towa blesses us with a great line up of guest artists. les
nubians (french sisters creating a big buzz in the us and europe
with their debut album "princess nubians"), joanne, (the
songstress formerly known as yavahn for her works with the masters
at works camp), tom browne (the very trumpet player who got you
singing and grooving to "funkin' for jamaica" back in 1980), cory
daye (ex-vocalist of dr. buzzards savannah ban), wizdom life (a
young ny based mc who featured on beastie boys' "body movin'
remix" and is working on a project with the talented hip hop
producer shawn j. period), vivien sessoms (who featured on "happy"
from "sound museum" and has worked with michael jackson, ryuichi
sakamoto etc.), pascale borel (ex-member of french pop duo
mikado).
last century modern follows the worldwide success of his second lp
"sound museum" 1998 and it's hit tracks "happy" and "gbi". "happy"
charted in at no.3 on billboard's dance chart and the frankie
knuckles remix was grammy nominated as best remix of the year
while gbi was a smash hit in the uk and australia.
never afraid of change, towa made his first leap into the new york
club scene (he had attended new york's parson school of design) by
braving the musical boundaries that were beginning to stymie the
club world in the late eighties. he gave his card to none other
than afrika from the jungle brothers, hoping for some dj work. it
turned out afrika liked the design of the card so much he invited
towa to design the cover for their second lp down by the forces of
nature. towa cajoled his way into the recording studio, convincing
the group to utilize him and his equipment on some of the
pre-production work. his efforts would ultimately lead him to pre
production work with a tribe called quest and then deee-lite. towa
began writing with dimitri after seeing the group perform one of
their early club shows.
his work with dimitri and lady kier would land deee-lite their
number 1 classic "groove is in the heart", from their
multi-platinum, groundbreaking debut album world clique, making
the trio the premier dance pop group of the early 90's.
in 1995 towa branched out on his own, releasing his first solo
album, "future listening!" to critical acclaim. the album featured
an array of musicians, including arto lindsay, maki nomiya, and
vocalist bebel gilberto, daughter of legendary brazilian vocalist
joao gilberto ("girl from ipanema"). her contribution added a
velvety touch to towa's spiralling grooves on dancefloor classics
such as "technova" and "batucada".
gilberto continued her collaboration with towa on his 1998 lp
"sound museum", lending her indomitable style to a clever remake
of the hall and oates classic, "private eyes". recorded in japan
and boosted by a number of eclectic musicians and vocalists, the
energetic mix further confirmed towa's global reputation as a
one-man aural assault artist, melding techno, r&b;, raga, hip hop
and surly jazz on a project that was more than two years in the
making. getting back to more of a steady, sweaty club rhythm, this
album featured inspired performances by rap legend biz markie,
kylie minogue, spoken word/jazz artist ken nordine and leaders of
the new school alumni boogie brown aka charlie brown among others.
"technova" was sampled in a tribe called quest's "find a way" from
1999's anthology album.
