Following a stint as a Strictly Rhythm favourite with a string of lauded
EPÆs circa æ95, Dan Kelley really came into his own after a move to release
on famed Chicago imprint, Guidance Recordings. Releasing under the monikers
Krimp and DKMA, the alias Callisto quickly found home at Guidance and æNeed
Ur LoveÆ became his outstanding debut EP, shaping the early identity of the
label in the process.
Vocal-driven, hypnotic and winding, a dark melody layered with deep spoken
echoesàit was the underlying funk, groove and swing which caught the ears
of Apollonia back when the track was first released. A favourite of the
trio during the Batofar days in Paris, they experienced on many an occasion
how when mixed in at the right time, it could bring about that Kwality
afterhours magic of a dancefloor utterly hooked in. Remaining one of the
backbones of the Apollonia sound today and reaffirming their musical ethos
of combining white music with black soul, Apollonia thought it only fitting
to pay tribute to the late Callisto by including the track in their recent
fabric 70 compilation, and in the form of a celebrated repress.
CallistoÆs influence went beyond the record stores, beyond the clubs, as
Paul & Francis of Dope Jams/Slow Too Speak put it; ôhe was a mentor to us
and so many other kids growing up in Boston, enraptured with the promise of
underground club culture.ö Today in 2013, his mission lives on via the
Apollonia revival of æNeed Ur LoveÆ, inspiring a whole new generation of
underground youths worldwide
