laws of motion has been one of the most consistently inspiring
labels in recent years and here finally in a selection that
represents the diversity and quality of it's output. although by
and large associated with the new sound of west london, the label
has a slightly more quirky perspective, so alongside the likes of
modaji and neon phusion we find the progressive dub of the truth
and the strange reggae / bossa hybrid of tom noble's version of the
jobim classic 'how insensitive'. that same quirkness runs through
phil asher's output for the label; the back 2 earth releases focus
on the downbeat side of the restless soul equation, even producing
a full latin hybrid with 'motorlaunch for hire'.
there is no easy definition of the laws of motion sound, but lets
not resort to the over used platitude "eclectic" which alwasy seems
to imply a randomness or lack of vision. what comes through
listening is a strain of musicality and inventiveness; the rhythms
and styles may be diverse but the sound is always lush and
fulfiling.
the laws of motion were part of sir isaac newton's massive
contribution to the development of modern science. laws of motion
the label is making a significant contribution of today's musical
world view. like much of the music pouring out of london and
elsewhere, it is a wave of creativity that is characterised by a
forward looking perspective built upon a solid appreciation of the
wealth of tradition. as newton said, "if i have seen further, it is
by standing on the shoulders of giants".
